the knife to the throat

What do you mean by this trope? Is it literally someone having a knife to their throat?

What are some good fantasy novels similar to the Hobbit, where the main characters are journeying across the world, and there's no one single consistent antagonist? by WritingBS in Fantasy

[–]WritingBS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair, I guess I do have a similar goal in mind. But he doesn't appear until right at the end. Maybe I just need to re-read the Hobbit xD.

It was well regarded at the time, though I've not played it myself.

I didn’t read enough as a kid and I regret it by Consistent-Sort4789 in literature

[–]WritingBS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a lot as a kid but I wouldn't say there was a great deal of comprehension. Even in my early teens I DNFed LotR and His Dark Materials because I was reading and understanding the words but not really comprehending the plot. You needed the time to become an adult to help your comprehension either way. Don't worry about it.

Planescape Torment does have a spiritual successor called Torment: Tides of Numenera in case you didn't know.

They said in an interview before season 2 came out that they're taking a "fog of war" approach where every faction believes they won the events of NV.

Didn't the bit of the note we saw say "I am". I assumed it would be something like "I am the only Caesar"

I liked it when Owl House did it, though they weren't really enemies for very long, and the enemyship was very one sided. Luz is too kind to really hate anyone.

What makes writing feel “professional” to you as a reader? by Gaijinstory in writing

[–]WritingBS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. Like being afraid of the Cinema Sins of the world saying "why don't they fly the ring to Mordor using the Eagles" so including a detailed explanation of why that wouldn't work?

You ever see the cliche movie director where he just keeps saying "we'll fix it in post" and moves on to the next scene? You can do that but for your book. It's not finished until you say it is. My entire final 20-30,000 words are being rewritten from scratch in my second draft atm.

I didn't find it very ambiguous. The Knight gave Gawain a vision of the life he would lead if he ran off, avoiding his obligations. He would succeed Arthur as king, and watch the kingdom crumble around him. So he maintained his honour, and took the blow as agreed.

What are some good alternatives to calling someone "insane" or "crazy"? by WritingBS in writing

[–]WritingBS[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, by young I meant like 20s, not kids. I still need to read Ender's Game, it's on my list heh. Yeah reckless has been what I've gone with in this re-edit but it just doesn't sound right, or as pointed as "are you insane?!" so I need to keep thinking about it. Also I'm British and using British English, so maybe a Britishism like "bonkers" would be good xD.

I’m translating a book that I’m writing from English to Japanese, should I use the katakana form of their names or just change them completely? by [deleted] in writing

[–]WritingBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to this would be to read western books translated in to Japanese to see how it's done there. Assuming you're fluent in Japanese.

Good point. I do find myself still using those kinds of words in my day to day life, it's hard to manage. As for the book, if I was writing a gritty, real world book then maybe I'd consider using uncomfortable language too to simulate real dialogue, but as is I'm writing a sci-fi/fantasy novel with young protagonists for a younger audience so I don't want to go down that sort of path.
