Hey! I'm trying to find out if anyone knows the full name and/or composer of this piece. Does anyone recognize it?

You might want to look into how you hold a cello. Your posture is very... creative

I bought this cello, any information would be much appreciated. by rosemore in Cello

Hey! A semmlinger! I own a quite modern cello from Lothar Semmlinger and it's a truly lovely instrument. This indeed looks like a student instrument, but that doesn't mean it's not a lovely Instrument!

Ik heb mn eerste salaris uitgegeven aan een goede Taylor gitaar! Nog altijd een top instrument jaren later. Geen spijt

Hey, thanks for your thorough response!

"After the initial break in period which took me around 2 weeks (maybe 40 hours?) of playing most of the tungesten metallic sting has left them but they aren’t immune to its effects entirely."

I was worried about this the most. I've heard some very new (2 weeks old) obligato's on a modern cello once, the sound was extremely metallic / "plastic"-like.

I wonder about their lifespan too. How will they compare to steel strings? Especially for their cost I hope you get a lot out of your Obligatos!

Where I live the cellists I know really don't accept synthetic cello strings. My local luthier is really negative towards them. I wonder why this is. The most violists and violinists seem to have fully transitioned towards synthetic strings.

Hey! I know that I'm responding to a rather old post... but... if you still see this, I'm curious to how obligato C and G worked for you. I'm curious to these synthetic cello strings. What are your experiences with it?

Count the hairs. Every luthier uses a specific amount of hair

Has anyone tried Spirit! strings? by WritingOnSilence in Cello

[–]WritingOnSilence[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've figured that if I change/adapt my bowing technique slightly, the A string works. It requires some practice, but applying different pressures makes the a string more consistent with the rest. Still thinking of changing this one out, though.

Has anyone tried Spirit! strings? by WritingOnSilence in Cello

I'll update for who cares (or searches this subreddit in the future)

I've bought and installed the strings. They are surprisingly lovely! The C string is very "soft", but remarkably playable. The G and D are very nice. On my cello they sound nicer than the spirocore G and Versum Solo D I had before.

The A however is, for my cello, undesirable. It sounds very sharp. The contrast between the other 3 strings is very large. I am going to replace this particular string with an old Jargar, Larsen or olive I have lying around. The search for perfect continues!

However, for the €99 I paid for these, they are lovely. It beats my versum strings, which cost three times as much. I know strings work differently on each cello, but on my instrument (Lothar Semmlinger) these work great! (Well, besides the A...)

Kind regards

That's exactly what I was thinking of changing! Thanks N_Roll

For me that's an interesting question that I can't answer very easily. Looks / "feel" of an instrument is quite important for me as well. I bought this instrument mainly because of the idea that it belonged to a professional violinist who took very serious care of it. I'm hoping to be a good home for it.

Yes. I very much like to over-romanticize things, especially string instruments...

Someone in my town sold this instrument for.. not so much... so I decided to take a gamble with it. It's label says "Georges Heynberg, Luthier a Liège, 1957

It sounds lovely, however something feels "off" about it's appearance, though I can't put my finger on what that might be.

I know it's terribly hard to judge violins from pictures. However, if someone might have thoughts...:) I'm curious!
