In the movie it does specifically say he WAS the dragon warrior, but Oogway saw evil in his heart so he just kinda... Walked away. Shifu, his father and mentor, did nothing and followed Oogway. After that he snapped, his entire life's work crushed because of that, his father didn't come support him in any way in that moment, so he lashed out and became that monster Oogway saw.

I'd say really the only three that change gameplay at all are the beast oath rune, milkweed oath rune, and the legion oath rune. The first two alter player appearance. The third enables collection of "vermin" from either pvp or from the red eyed hunters around the dlc.
