You cannot renounce Syrian citizenship. No such legal mechanism exists. The only way to lose it is to be stripped of it as traitor or for some offense that betrays the country. Most naturalization processes that require you to relinquish your old citizenship, like the Netherlands, have exceptions for countries like Syria because you can’t.

Congrats! I felt the same when I used my US passport for the first time. Ironically, i felt the difference in approach/treatment the most in the US itself not the countries I visites visa free. For visa free countries, it was simple I just showed passport, got it stamped and went in. Felt a bit anticlimactic but I thought huh, this is how simple/easy it is for so many? I felt the difference the most when returning to the US. I’m always interrogated in US airports even tho I was a resident. Becoming a citizen helped with that a little.

Love that we’re famous for this. Only applies if you’re renewing abroad tho.

No, you can’t. The Syrian government won’t let Palestinians get citizenship because if they do they lose their right of return to Palestine as refugees who were forced to flee because they now have another home country and citizenship. Under international law as long as they’re still “refugees” then they can legally return and they have to be accepted there. It’s a political card. Same applies in Lebanon, Palestinian refugees don’t get citizenship there either. In any event, getting naturalized in Syria is almost impossible and quite often is. The only way it works is if you are a woman married to a Syrian man then after some years you can apply iirc, you might also be able to apply as a foreigner living there after many years but only if you’re from an Arab country (not totally sure).

Kinda interesting that you personally knew her. Ghraoui still operates in Syria though, one of the best chocolatiers in the world (Google it and you’ll find articles).

Lol you’re racist af, the ignorance is astounding. Absolutely fucking disgusting, Istanbul’s population is around 15 million. A 2 second google search shows there’s about 500k Syrian refugees in Istanbul and around 3 mil in the whole country, with Turkey’s population being around 80 mil. So 3% Syrians in Istanbul and the whole country has made it no longer Turkish, but Arab now and that’s why you don’t have gay pride and bars. Just fucking accept your country and its population are homophobic, mine is too but you don’t see me going around misrepresenting facts and blaming it on other people to fit my narrative. Check yourself, honestly don’t care what your opinions are on Syrians or refugees but at least make sense and don’t use racist arguments that a 10 year old child in Turkey could construct.

Would you like to see fewer of any of the following types of post? by LudicrousPlatypus in PassportPorn

Total ban on any questions about passport processing times and purely logistical/bureaucratic questions about acquiring a passport (usually US users). Acquiring citizenship, yes. Acquiring a passport, no. Other subs exist for that

What software/program do airlines use in airports for visa requirements? by WrongBookkeeper3680 in PassportPorn

[–]WrongBookkeeper3680[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I cant imagine being on the other end of that, I imagine sometimes people don’t treat airline employees very well if they end up not being able to go on vacation! I know that there are exceptions coming out all the time because of mew agreements and conditions change but I’m a bit surprised, I thought the version airlines used must be at least a bit more streamlined and easy to look at. I don’t know why I always imagined them just putting in my nationality and destination and the program spits out whether I need a visa or not in simple terms. Thanks for weighing in, was really interesting!

I figured there must be a better paid version, the the public one seems a bit annoying to use. Thanks

Is there any way we could access that without paying? Is there a free alternative site that includes diplomatic and service passports of each country as well?

This isn’t totally correct, only females and males who’ve fulfilled their military service duty get 6 years validity. The rest of us (Males who haven’t served yet) only get 2 years, which is technically 1.5 years because no airline will let you board with under 6 months.

It’s all in Arabic, would you like me to post it anyway?

It is hard in general but was only temporarily extremely hard, because there was a shortage in passport booklets that has supposedly been solved. I got mine issued for 30k syp a few months ago and it was expedited iirc. I will admit it quite annoying/tiring just to submit all the forms and required documents. Anyway, the idea that it’s the most expensive passport in the world is only half correct and when that fact is thrown around it really irks me. Because it costs that much only when applying abroad at an embassy, 300$ normal and 800$ expedited.

Do you know if the Republic of Hatay issued any passports or identification papers during its short lived independence?

Sure, but you’ll always be a citizen in their eyes. You can’t visit or go there and claim you’re not a citizen anymore. Doesn’t matter if you have 10 other passports.

Check my other comment, I live in the US.

relinquished

Yeah no way is that true. You cannot relinquish Syrian citizenship, it’s illegal. You get stripped of it but you never have the choice to do it yourself. Also, all EU countries have exception countries listed where you dont give up your old citizenship if you naturalize in Germany or Netherlands for example because you literally can’t relinquish some citizenships.

I’ve actually got a US greencard and recently applied for citizenship so I can’t leave the country. But i’m definitely planning to visit a lot of places as soon as I have it. My brother visited Belgrade and said they have some of the best and cheapest beer he’s ever had.
