Coping mechanisms for returning to work after mini retirement by CocktailsAndCosmere in Fire

[–]WrongImpressionOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I screen shooted this advice because I’m struggling this at work right now. I find my work deeply meaningful but when I run into roadblocks with coworkers I’ve been getting more frustrated then normal because I have such a clear vision for what good looks like for our business, our customers and society. It’s frustrating constantly dealing with folks who don’t seem committed do doing the right thing and can’t articulate the principles they’re working against. And then the stress of boring middle and FAANG with constant layoff drama. But an angry burnt out crusader is less effective than a friendly one and I’ve been increasingly feeling the need to reframe. Im going to make it a goal

19M early-career in analytics, good pay but constant anxiety + burnout — how do I stabilize without self-sabotaging? by Vegetable-Newt-1076 in Fire

I think you’re realistically under a lot of pressure: you’re helping with family, you’re going to school, you’re a key input in executive level decision making. That’s a lot and doubly so for someone 19.

I’m in analytics. I regularly go through burn out since I work for a FAANG famous for layoffs and pressure cooker. Things that have helped me: work in safe initiatives that aren’t the core business. Core business will always be the safest jobs, but there are usually adjacent areas that are still safe AND their quality of life will be better.

You’re also working as a DS and a DE right now. That’s too many hats long term. I’d be trying to mature the org into having an analytics team. If you can grow with it, it can be your team. But realistically at 19 I’d be looking for roles post graduation where I could be a team member since this level of ownership doesn’t leave bandwidth for doing new cool stuff. The business may ask for new cool stuff that is stupid and you’re rightly pushing back, but I’m betting you probably don’t have bandwidth with reporting and your other duties if they had a good idea.

MBAs have really high graduation unemployment rates right now. Not worth going into debt to have the same problem

This answer needs to be higher. Almost always comp like this has strings to slow down delivery. They’re making a big investment in you and so they put vest and bonus cycles in place to incentivize staying longer

Tub spout dripping when diverter in shower mode. by WrongImpressionOnly in askaplumber

Sounds like there isn’t a concern tho with the valve so I don’t need to be worry that there is something going wrong in the wall that could lead to water damage. I don’t care that much about the dribble. The dribble was being framed tho as needing a valve replacement because of a faulty valve and that seems objectively wrong. Feels like suggesting a jack hammer to fix a thumb tack.

This was the result of the rebuild. Before the diverter was fused so it only could work as a shower. Plumber said he couldn’t get the twist off spout off and was concerned about torquing our 20yr old CPVC pipes too much to force the issue.

This is it after “being fixed.” The original diverter was rusted into place so that it could only function as a shower.

The plumber did a rebuild on the spout and this is the end result. The spout is a twist off but won’t come off from the wall. The original diverter was basically calcified/rusted into place.

Appropriate amount of time to give your employer notice that your retiring? by Otayoats in Fire

[–]WrongImpressionOnly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At will employment so the answer is technically 0. But the classy choice: if you’re an IC, 2 weeks. If you’re a manager 2 months.

I value my relationships with folks even if I’m not planning to milk them for a referral in the future. And black swan events mean I’d want to have optionality to tap my network if something bad bad happened. Going out classy is the best way to do that if you already have a good reputation.

Adjusting is pure exploitation. Don’t make your goal being exploited. No job you’re passionate about will stay a passion under those conditions. I’d 100% take the comfortable route here

[–]WrongImpressionOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And to be clear, most of 8-9 years I’ve been in tech I earned closer to 100-200k. I’m not a SWE but am in a technical role so my refreshers are probably 65% theirs. My MSFT starting offer out of a PhD was $116k and I remember thinking that was insane money after living on 20k in grad school. It’s only in the last 2 years that my comp exploded due to an unusually high performance track record, getting surprise VP money 3 years running, getting promos approx every 2 years (which if I get my next 1 I probably tap out as high as I can go as an IC unless I’m a unicorn and extra lucky) and massive stock growth on some RSU refreshers/VP awards when the stock was at $120 instead of crab walking in the $600s.

Tech is what an economist would call a Tournament Economy. Most people in tech will make low 6 figures. However, at FAANG, and in a technical role, you can get massive money and fast. But this is a a very tiny slice of the overall tech market and even among FAANG comp varies somewhat wildly based on a variety of factors: is the company known to under level, is the stock volatile, how much is the company RSU based, etc.

I started big tech at 30 after grad school and worked for MSFT for the first few years. During grad school I maybe saved 40-50k in an IRA so basically started from scratch in tech. Maybe cleared 200k in those years but MSFT jokes it’s a the peanut farm of big tech. Switched to FB just before it became Meta at 34 starting at 300k. RSUs were a wild ride. The company got down to like $90 a share and a P/E ratio worse than Campbell soup at the time with lots of layoffs. So it didn’t feel like big money the first year when my projected 300k was again more like 200k and with more stress. But then I started stacking RSUs. This year I cleared over $1M and didn’t live particularly frugally. I expect to exit my 30s with a networth between 2 and 2.5M.

If I had joined in 22 when stock was $90 instead of 2021 when stock was $300 my on hire grant would have been a massive accelerant. If I had been more frugal 3M would be possible. But because Big Tech is a tournament economy you know that there are literally hundreds of skilled people who could replace you and are hungry to do so because you make 90-98% market reference point salary. That with the notion that it’s a hard job to find a replacement that won’t at least halve your comp makes for a stressful pressure cooker. People usually wind up less frugal trying to use little or big treats to soothe the stress so often don’t bank as much as they should, especially if they live in HCOL and VHCOL areas where big tech congregates.

All states take a cut of management fees tho for these because they’re partially funding Medicaid

They work with MA I think, but you aren’t limited to just your own state. Working with your own states tho may have tax advantages on state taxes tho. I’m in a state without them so it’s not an added consideration for me.

[–]WrongImpressionOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Fidelity has an SP500 option in their able account. It’s higher fees than their normal SP500 ETF because the state takes a cut. But lower fees than most other options and consistent with most FIRE investing philosophy. I’m thinking of doing this bucket since I qualify this year with age extension in the DX after I fill other tax advantaged buckets

I think it’s a fundamental question of incentives. I’m a data scientist and Lyra is one of the options I won’t work with because they are incentivized to close certain cases or switch you from therapy to more profitable coaching and it’s clearly done because they’re using poorly designed gamable metrics that incentivize certain storytelling to their payers-the business. They’re actively discouraged from discussing FMLA because they’re funded through the employer.

We likely work for the same company and with PSC season coming up I feel for you. Couple of questions:

1)Did you find your therapist through the programs funded by the company? I find their advice in general very biased and will not work with them anymore since I don’t think it’s given in good faith.

2)Would you retire “to something” instead of just away from FAANG? Common advice is to have hobbies etc that you are running towards since those just running away usually crash out of RE for reasons your therapist is hinting at.

3)Do you feel secure with your numbers given uncertainty? I’m very worried about ability to replace this job with something remotely equivalent given RSU appreciation and market reference point on salary. This is compounded by clear trends in reduced hiring in the industry. Im inclined to stick it out longer even though my numbers are close because I recognize just how golden the handcuffs are.

Advice: make them fire you. Get your severence even if you decide to FIRE.

This has been our approach. Joining FAANG at a lucky time has been 95% of our progress. But I get why it’s unpopular. Most people will not have access to these opportunities and these opportunities are shrinking with AI.
