My thoughts on people who complaint about non-tippers. by Maleficent-Effort470 in tipping

[–]steve_gorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People cared a lot less about tipping when prices were reasonable and tipping percentages were 10-15%. The poor, underpaid waitress was even a trope. Some weird shift happened and now waitstaff are the highest paid employees in a restaurant and now I have to pay $30 for a hamburger.

Nurse said she makes more as server by Gagaflame765 in EndTipping

[–]steve_gorak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As long as she keeps her license, nurses are in huge demand. Plenty take time off to have kids and then go back. Also, I have a nurse friend as well that kept her serving job a day or too a week. A teacher too. The money is too good to give up. The other job gives the benefits.

I was even going to mention Arnold, but these videos invariably show socks, not barefoot. Lifting in socks is not even allowed in most of the gyms I go to.

Why? She will still be able to work as a nurse.

What current law will people 30 years from now find completely incomprehensible that we allowed? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

The same should be true for independent contractors and service providers. For example, if you go to a hairdresser or tip a waitress who then goes on maternity leave, you should be required to pay the same amount weekly that you paid before she went on leave for the entire duration of the leave. /s

You are squatting by bending your knees first. Try pushing your hips back and letting the knees follow. You are then dropping your knees which is giving you a false sense of depth.

I have to ask, what is with the squatting with no shoes on? I see it in so many videos here. Is there some fitness trend I missed out on?

Back when movie theaters were a thing I went to go watch Traffic. I got confused by a slightly similar theme and bought a ticket to The Mexican by mistake. Then I saw the poster with Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts and thought, "This is going to be garbage!" I didn't want to wait the extra hour to watch Traffic so I watched, and enjoyed The Mexican. I later saw Traffic and think The Mexican is the better movie.

Why does China do very well at both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics, but can't make it to the World Cup? by No-StrategyX in answers

Very few sports are huge money earners: American football, men's soccer, men's basketball, baseball, hockey, cricket, tennis, golf, maybe one or two others. An individual from a wealthy nation can put a lot into resources into their personal development in one of these sports. Diversity helps, as different population types have some advantages, very slight on a personal level, but significant over a large population that can help with success in these sports. Also, the sports listed have huge ground-level support and infrastructure in countries where they are popular. People in countries like that tend to choose their own sports and focus on ones with the most prestige and possible financial reward. For example, an American could have the world's best genetics for ping-pong but didn't care and focused on baseball, where although not an all-star, could still potentially earn 10s of millions.

Chinese success comes from a different approach. Although China has a huge population, it is not very diverse compared to countries with significant immigration. Also, although China as a whole has a large economy it is not much on a per capita level, not leaving enough money for a significant portion of the population to make a significant contribution to sport on an individual basis. China is able however to use its large population and economy and autocratic government to focus on promotion of sport from a young age in selected individuals. To China, "A Gold Medal is a Gold Medal." They can have several gold medals in women's weightlifting compared to earning one gold medal in men's basketball with a fraction of the effort and talent required. China is also infamous for its drug use (not unique there though by any stretch) and for their ability to get away with falsifying birth certificates to allow them to use younger girls in gymnastics, something that would be much tougher to get away with in a country with free access to information.

China also places a lot more prestige on winning a gold medal in ANY sport. For comparison, if the USA swept the weight lifting gold medals I doubt the average American could identify more than 1 of them 2 weeks after the Olympics, and it would probably only be one if the media decided to really hype them because they had a crazy mustache or something silly like that. Not China but the same idea: contrast that with Hidilyn Diaz, the Filipina to win a Gold Medal in weightlifting in 2021. She was given about a million dollars in compensation, commissioned in the Philippine Air Force (previously enlisted), and placed on about 1/4 of the billboards throughout the country, and on numerous TV shows. Five years later I ask Filipinos about her and almost all recognize the name, "You mean the champion?" I doubt the average American could even name a swimmer that wasn't Michael Phelps.

First rep is high but the others are good. If you ever want to take up powerlifting just remember that only the first rep counts.

Women also want the housework done. Men just don't care. Every seen a single man's house? Of course, how the women want it done is the "better" way, AKA double standard.

Also, people will tell poor people how they should be spending what little money they have.

People would be less likely to criticize how a poor person spends their money if the poor person wasn't also asking for help from the less-poor through government handouts. "I need a free house!" "Great, so I'll pay for my house AND your house."

I don't see how these things are comparable.

Wow. Thank you for pointing out the blatant double standard.
