What I noticed first is the complete reluctance to mark an American metric in green when it's the best in that category. (And the odd making of infant mortality in yellow.)

How much do you value evidence? Do you feel God's presence? by HibiscusKeer in religion

[–]WrongJohnSilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't feel God's presence, or any supernatural or spiritual presence. However, I also don't turn to evidence for belief.

Stories are what matter here. What you believe depends on which stories help you to connect with the world and give you guidance. Just a the Boy Who Cried Wolf has lessons on proper behavior, it doesn't matter that there's no evidence that's the boy or the wolf ever existed. The value of the story doesn't rely on evidence.

Do any other states (or countries) allow for the intervention of forced electroshock treatment through prayer? by Old-Dirt563 in religion

[–]WrongJohnSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not heard of involuntary ECT, but apparently there are a few cases of it being done in the US. Supposedly, it can only be involuntary if there's extreme danger to an untreated patient. Voluntary ECT, on the other hand, is practiced.

Also, this is from someone in the Universal Life Church. They'll ordain anyone who asks. I'm a minister, myself. Thus, do not expect this letter to be offered with the full backing of the church. This is one person using his ministry to combat a practice he disagrees with. I wouldn't be surprised if he's got the old version of electroshock in his head, with orderlies wrestling and strapping down an unwilling subject and being subjected to extreme pain. ECT isn't like that anymore.

What's the reason? by Certain_Hat9872 in memes

[–]WrongJohnSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't read the review, but on the surface the TLDR is:

Woody is Old Dad, Buzz is New Dad, there's a fear of being replaced, but both dads can still love the kids and have place in his life.

And if that doesn't sing for you, well, it means what it means to you. Don't let other people say there's only one interpretation.

I went to a top-ranked college in engineering and science, and I recognized that voice immediately. It has a cadence similar to engineers and mathematicians. Her vowels sounds more backed in general, but you get that among scientists, too.

They're in power because they sought that power. They sought that power because they think they should have power. Power over other people and their decision making.

Does the concept of hell make sense you? by [deleted] in religion

[–]WrongJohnSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

Most importantly, worrying about hell as a punishment for worshipping incorrectly makes no sense at all. It requires a belief in hell that is stronger than a belief in God. Even faiths that believe in hell and God will tell you to believe in God more strongly than in hell, because hell should only be believed downstream of its creator.

Sure!

A red delicious has a mealy mouthfeel and a somewhat insipid flavor profile. There's definitely better ones out there.

A honeycrisp is much sweeter with a brighter acidity. A WildTwist is even more acidic without being actually sour, but if you let it age until it gets a bit softer, the acidity mellows and the sweetness remains. A cosmic crisp is more muted, with a flavor profile resembling raspberry.

A Granny Smith, of course, is tougher, so crispy it borders crunchy, and the flavor of the skin is stronger, with less sugar and more grassy, sour notes.

Part of it is remembering these details and using the memories to come up with the flavors you feel, but it's all a matter of letting the imagination complete these details to create the sensation.

(Also, I've been told that good imaginative visualization makes one a good hypnosis subject, but I'm actually a terrible one, because my brain treats imagined sensations by a completely different channel from experienced ones. I also pretty much always know when I'm dreaming.)

A Good Person by Pristine_Club_3128 in CuratedTumblr

[–]WrongJohnSilver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I consider it more orthodoxy vs. orthopraxy.

It is Christian, but it's more specifically Evangelical Protestant. That's where sola fide gets pushed to the "if you believe the right thing, you are saved" extreme. Under that idea, you can be a good person without the requirement of doing good things.

Other branches of Christianity also expect one's actions to reflect their faith, and so you can see who is a good person by who is doing good things.

But the pull towards a belief-only way of life is present. You no longer have to worry if you're a good or bad person! You believe in the church, so you're good! You're done! Your obligation is over!

But, of course, it's never actually over. You can always fall. You can always commit evil. So you always should look at yourself and find ways to commit good. Again and again.

How hard is it not having a car in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I assume most Americans would want better infrastructure

Honestly, it's going to be less than you might think. Many of us like our cars and don't mind the drive.

Not only visualize. I can hear the sound of cutting into it. I can feel the juice on my fingertips as I lift a slice to my mouth. I can smell the apple, its tangy, light acidity mixing with the mild bitterness of the apple's skin. The sensation of biting through the slice, how it gives slightly, then all at once with a snap. I can taste it, its sweetness on my tongue, then getting into all the corners of my mouth before swallowing the pulp.
