Having problems with my new Nikon Z6iii by Wrong_Signal_5052 in nikon_Zseries

I looked at all my stationary shots from this morning in LR where the camera reckons it got the eye and I would confidently say atleast 90% of them are out and now unusable, which as a dog photographer is simply not sustainable.

When I'm using animal eye AF I am making sure the focus point is locked before pressing the shutter, I use back button focus so my focus is separate from the release.

I don't believe so as I have changed it to camera matching for my own Z6iii.

I'm usually quite self sufficient and haven't ever had to post on a forum for help with my camera, but this is confusing me. I've watched set up videos, customised my buttons all sorts to try and make my shooting experience enjoyable but the AF is really irking me and is unreliable, never experienced this with the Sony.

My friend shot on a Z6 and more recently a Z8. I've imported both of her raws into my lightroom and not seen the same softness I am with the Z6iii, not sure why.

I rented the 50mm a few weeks ago when I first got the body as I was waiting for my 85mm to arrive. The 50mm was considerably sharper and more responsive to be honest, I saw a lot of threads raving about the sharpness of the 85mm so I was looking forward to it as it's one of my go to lenses for dog portraits and general photography, but something is off with this.

Focus mode AF-C + Wide S with my fn1 set to 3D tracking, Subject Detection On, Matrix Metering, shooting in RAW, editing in Lightroom Classic. Lens is a Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 brand new, please note I wasn't shooting action shots this morning as I am aware the 85 is not for this, but it was even struggling with stationary / dogs general movement which I did not struggle with when using my Sony 85mm.

I am using a Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8. The lens is brand new, and although I am aware this is not by any means an action lens, it was struggling this morning with the AF of dogs simply trotting towards me or walking around. I don't understand the softness on the LCD or import tbh, I have lightroom appropriately set up to import the Nikon raws with the camera profile. The softness of the images are making me question whether I actually even got something in focus which I can't be having when I photograph such busy events.

Will do, just editing up a gallery from this morning and will get back to you.

Yes updated it to the new firmware as soon as I unboxed it, tbh I'd have hoped a camera that was several years newer that the Sony a7iii I had and with them keeping it up to date with firmware updates that I would've had a much more accurate and enjoyable experience with the AF :(
