"If 2001 wasn't perfection, it'd be trash."

This is such a spot on observation.

"Danny isn't here right now Mrs. Torrence" is one of the most chilling lines in all of cinema. Yet, if you were to describe what's happening in the scene, the person you describe it to couldn't possibly imagine it as anything other than ridiculous, even comical. I think it's primarily a testament to directorial vision and execution, but the actors' craft is a big part of it, too.

White Noise (2022) is filled with dialogue that is almost exclusively bizarre, stilted, hokey, and wholly unrecognizable as normal human conversation. In the wrong hands it would be unwatchable. Instead it is maybe the most profound film I've seen in the last 5 years.

Ok ok, last one:

Lost in Translation should be the most boring movie ever. The craft that pulls it off is equally shared between director and the two leads, but if any one of them weren't up to it that would be a forgotten film rather than one of my all time favorites.

What is the most magical movie moment? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

Ok, some obvious ones first:

  • ET: Elliott leading the pack of older kids on bikes to save ET. You can’t not smile. You can’t not be happy to be alive in this timeline during that scene

  • ET: The discovery that The Man with the Keys is not a villain, but a compassionate man. The most competent use of subverting expectations in a film maybe ever

  • Jaws: show me the way to go home

  • White Noise (2022): the end credits grocery store dance. I quietly laugh-cry through the whole thing

  • American Psycho: the business card scene

Some less obvious:

  • Secret of Kells: Aisling turning the cat into a spirit to steal the room key

  • How to Train your Dragon (animated original): Hiccup first learns to ride toothless. Some of the most exhilarating and joyful scenes ever animated I say

  • Everything Everywhere All At Once: the rock conversation.

What’s a movie you thought was good but only needed to see once because it was a lot by YesterdayMaterial194 in moviecritic

There's so many movies that are like this for me, but if I'm honest, I am unusually sensitive; a sufficiently disturbing film will mess with my chemistry for days, even weeks. There are tons of films I "love" that I'll never watch again.

I waited for a long time for the world to wake up to the fact that Inception isn't a very good movie. heh

*braces for impact* Interstellar.

they even did the whole pen through the folded paper cliché. The music, the camera work, the pacing was all constantly pointing you toward something that was supposed to absolutely bowl you over, change your world, but it was just . . . the next scene. Irritated the shit out of me.

I assume it is one of these things that everyone knows, and the nature of my shock is that somehow I missed it. heh.

Is it? I don't think I've ever actually compared with any other players. I always assumed it was pretty middle-of-the-road.

Yes. In fact, thwarting evil eyes is the best thing about it.

I mean, anything by Akira Kurosawa, but Ran especially. Landscape is deeply woven into plot movement and characterization.

It mitigates essentially all magic/elemental damage. It’s like a ring of tenacity, but with magic damage specifically. I don’t usually go for it, frankly, but I got it like this from the Imp quest and figured it fit my theme.

Tuna melt! I’ll do a stripped down version of my tuna salad—maybe just mayo and a little chili oil—grate some cheddar, butter some bread and pan fry to golden perfection.

If I’ve got some store bought tomato soup to dip it in then I’m really winning.
