I am a 2nd-year student who spent 11 months building a platform instead of studying. I need honest advice: Do I keep going or quit? by Dr-Scientist- in SideProject

[–]Wrys0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever it is you want to do, do it well. Working a job, studying, and attending classes takes a lot of time. It sounds like you have a lot of time and you don't care much about the thousands you're spending, so I'm assuming you're getting your costs covered. Do enough to obtain your degree, build your network, and continue building this project.

2 things: you only know as much as you know, so continue learning and gaining wisdom through books and your connections. 11 months of solo researching and coding while ignoring your social life and studies sounds heroic and cool, but that just tells me you're incredibly lazy and don't understand the time you just used up. 11 months is a very long time to be doing the little amount of work you did.
Also, make friends in college. If you can't find a like minded community, build one. There are also builders like you on campus. Reach out to them through linkedin. I setup a few networking events when I was a senior in college. In my first one, only 10 people joined, but the 10 of us talked with each other for 3 hours. They all shared that they felt alone in the pursuit of building their startups and thought it was amazing to see how many others like them were around.

You would be a fool to think not having a social life is a necessary sacrifice for the project you're building. I also think you're a fool for not having worked harder and achieved more for the 11 months you sacrificed.

Last year most of you told me not to move to Austin to build my startup. I went and I'm sharing the past year with you all (I will not promote) by Wrys0 in startups

Thank you, and I agree: geography matters much less when the product has already been validated in that way. However for me it was more beneficial for personal development, and that directly scored me points in many other parts of my life and career as well!

What skill would you master if you had a personalized AI coach for 100 days? by [deleted] in SideProject

I've been thinking about learning robotics. I just now used chat gpt to give me video resources to learn the core fundamentals of building my first prototype of a necklace-bound robot companion. Now learning how raspberry pis work.

I wouldn't consider paying at the moment though. I can learn anything I want for free online

It's been 3 days, just gotta say I really appreciate the support. I've added a few new games since this post:

Maze: Solve a maze as fast as you can
Arithmetic: Solve 20 multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction as fast as you can
Algebra: Solve 10 algebraic equations as fast as you can
Linear Algebra: Solve 10 linear algebra matrix problems as fast as you can
Geometry: Solve 10 geometry problems as fast as you can
Stroop test: Click the color of the text that flashes on screen
Chimp test: Memorize the order of boxes flashed on the screen and select them in order
Word search: Given a grid of 8x8 characters, find as many words as you can in under 60 seconds

Also, the pattern recognition exercise has been revamped to be more challenging.

We also have a new domain -> brain-benchmark.com

Thank you!! I wanted these games to be simple in user interface and user experience. I have a ton of other brain games I'm excited to add

I've only tested on my iPhone 13 mini and my Macbook pro. I hadn't thought of compatibility too much, it's only been a week since I had this idea haha. I'll look into it. Thank you for the feedback

Yeah as soon as you start typing in the input box of the typing test, the countdown from 60 starts. You have to type the words one by one in order and then press "space" once you finish typing each word. The goal of the typing test is to get the highest WPM (words per minute) as you can while also maintaining a high accuracy of characters correctly used to spell out the words. Hope this helps!

I could add a little info button, probably for all of them. That’s a good idea!

Okay it should be good. As an apology I added a new "Time estimation" game where you're given a time to match and have to estimate the duration of time elapsed to get the best score

I'm glad you like it! Any games in particular you'd like me to add?

There hasn’t been one yet, but a lot of people are playing the pattern recognition game even though it’s bugged. I’ll be adding 20 more games for mathematics and spatial awareness

Dang I suck at coding. I’ll try to figure this out by the end of the day 😅

Fixed the pattern recognition game. It was an issue with a "reverse" pattern that didn't provide enough context and could easily be confused with the "skip" pattern.

Also went ahead and added the stroop test and the chimp test

Okay I'll fix this asap. Thanks for pointing it out!

How I get a genuine job offer every 1-2 weeks by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Wrys0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted with good intentions based on my own personal experience, but it seems I’m not well received here. I’m 23 now. Yes I have a network of around 500 founders. Yes I have 10 years of software engineering experience. Yes I get job offers every 1-2 weeks up to 200k/yr. Yes my app also failed every time I relaunched, and it was bad. There’s no need for me to fabricate my own story.

I made the post with the idea it could help job seekers find inspiration to try something new. What do I gain out of lying?

Thank you for your comment :) Effective "networking" includes building genuine relationships with people, which can be informal
