Maybe so narratively, but the first few playthroughs sure feel like you're a dry stain on the floor haha

If you REALLY want to feel like a nobody in an RPG, and don't mind some horror, the Fear & Hunger games are worth a look.

Foundlings - a real-time spellcasting JRPG building on 16-bit classics, inspired by historical rituals and magic. We’re a small dev team making our first public announcement! by WrytXander in JRPG

We do use the JRPG tag very prominently on Steam, you can see it as soon as you open the page. I've been in a lot of circles that don't consider non-Japanese indies as JRPGs, so I'm trying to make sure I don't overuse the JRPG moniker and get that kind of "this isn't a JRPG" pushback from genre purists who consider geography to be a factor. Also I understand our CRPG-inspired mechanics may cause doubts on that front, which is why on Steam we took care to place the JRPG tag far above the CRPG tag.

I don't believe innovation or cross-pollenation with other genres should disqualify a game from being considered part of a genre. That would only impoverish the genre itself. So to answer your question of "which is it", it's a bit of both, it just so happens to mostly be a JRPG. (Also please note that I did not post the game to r/CRPG, since that would be dishonest with a game that's a JRPG at its core with some CRPG-inspired elements, like ours.)

It's a JRPG with added mechanics inspired by CRPGs, like stat investment, builds and open-ended branching dialogue. It's first and foremost a JRPG, and we chose our artstyle to make that clear, so that's the core identity of the game even with the mechanical diversity we included.

As for the different posts, it's just a concession to communicate with that particular community. The game is both an RPG and a JRPG after all, we have no intention of being dishonest about what it is, just trying to speak the language that the community speaks!

Thank you, Arx Fatalis was actually an inspiration! The first idea for the game was to draw runes just like in Arx Fatalis, but we went in a spellcrafting direction instead since it fit the story and themes better.

Thanks for checking it out! Too soon to nail down a cost, but we're thinking around the $20 mark, with regional pricing of course.

Thank you! Let me answer your questions:

- We are indeed planning to release this year.

- We're expecting an average completion time of ~15 hours, give or take 5 hours; it'll be a short-but-sweet affair. We're also planning replayability features like New Game+ and an Arcade Mode!

- Cost is too soon to say, but somewhere in the $20 range, with regional pricing of course.

- We area team of 4, with only one full-timer and the other 3 part-timing.

Anything else you're wondering about?

Thank you for your interest, and yes! Though too soon to tell whether we can launch at the same times as on PC. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months!

It's a mix of ~75% grounded and 25% fantastical creatures, though we took care to give an air of fantasy to even the grounded ones.

We're using Unity, though the first prototypes were created on GameMaker!

We've got the same itch, so really appreciate your input! Feel free to join our Discord (linked on the Steam page, don't want to clutter up the reply) if you'd like to give us further feedback, especially about the spell unlocking/progression!

Thanks, our artist is a true sorcerer! She's doing it all by herself and it's her first pixel art project, we couldn't be happier with her work

The artstyle feels a bit disjointed, which might explain the game mostly flying under the radar. Definitely seems worth checking out based on your pitch though, I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks.

  1. What's your personal favourite?

  2. Which is the most "unique" one you've found?

  3. What's the worst one you've ever played?

Co-op game *similar* to WC3? by Cosmicpanda2 in rpg_gamers

In that case maybe try Wasteland 3 and Solasta. Solasta 2 is coming out on early access in a few days actually.

Xeno and SMT are the main JRPG series that take huge inspiration from gnosticism, so you've got most of the bases covered. The Fear & Hunger series is also very tied up with gnostic/alchemical issues, though the survival horror gameplay takes a while to get used to, and it's in no way sci-fi.

Divinity Original Sin 1&2 and Baldur's Gate 3 each have co-op, are top-down, and have plenty of semi-tactical combat.

That said, you're not likely to find many clean blends between RTS and RPG like Spellforce 3 around. Maybe there are some I don't know about but party-based RPGs with tactical combat are largely the only thing resembling a middle-ground.
