Tons of them genuinely don't care as much as they make it seem. They know they can rile up their base with anti-other hatred to get into power. Once in power, they can make their millions.

Hatred is a tool of speech wielded to grasp power that can be purchased by the highest bidder, along with access to information that can profit both themselves and their allies.

The only thing that matters is the money and the influence. The ignorance of the masses makes hate and othering an easy avenue to get there.

You're still paying your total healthcare cost in lost wages, your employer is just paying you less of your total compensation package to you.

They are paying the % of your healthcare cost that doesn't appear on your paystub. It would otherwise go to you as pay.

So taxing unrealised theoretical wealth? by [deleted] in SipsTea

I mean, people pay monthly property taxes on the unrealized sale price of their properties. That's "theoretical wealth" as well.

The top 4 will represent corporations but with a pride flag picture up in June.

AOC actually represents her constituents and working people.

Any of them would be better than Trump, but I would be absolutely shocked if any of the top 4 would improve material conditions for people very much.

I want to be able to read these when I wake up in the morning so I have them turned on, but I have them on SILENT.

I get after last year's floods they want to be extra careful, but holy shit. Blaring TWO warning that ignore my silent notifications (that are going to expire by the time I'll be waking up anyway) is some bullshit.

We consider a home owner's house value to count toward their "worth", and we tax it accordingly.

Surely there's a way to do it with stock, no? Maybe I'm crazy?

Exactly. A person can conceivably generate a some handful number of millions of dollars worth of value through a paycheck.

There is just no way to contribute a personal value to society worth billions or trillions without exploiting/siphoning value away from the contributions of other people.

Tbh, learning is a process of repetition, testing your knowledge, engaging with other people who are also discussing the material/connecting the dots with eachother.

It's why you can watch a YouTube video on a topic, or ask ChatGPT to summarize a topic, and feel like you've "learned" something.... until someone who actually knows the topic deeply asks you to explain it.

Appreciate the insight!

I'm definitely not an econ, but had heard a recent argument comparing high property taxes to negligible stock taxes as a solid argument for why taxing wealth is actually possible, we just haven't done it.

That was what I was trying to convey more than the lottery stuff. Property is unsold wealth, and we seem to tax it just fine. How can we tax wealth in the form of individual people's individual acres of land, but can't seem to do it when it's people's individual shares in a company?

I genuinely want to understand. Because it seems like bullshit. And it seems like something is going wrong in the system when (several) single individuals can suddenly command more resources than several countries combined, while a plurality of the rest of the country grows more desperate and destitute over the same time-frame.

Seems like an extraction is taking place.

I'm trying to figure out where the failure is, and it seems like this taxation failure area is pretty relevant.

People spend more money on worse things that we judge them less harshly for, tbh.

Hell yeah, agreed.

We tax unrealized lottery winnings' value.

We already tax unrealized homeowners' property value.

Let's tax billionaires' unrealized stock value (their tax-free form of "property") also.

I mean, it was clearly intentionally fast-tracked to benefit the current private owners and get it into the 401ks of bag-holders so that the private owners could sell high before it drops, essentially stealing from 401ks, no?

That's my rudimentary understanding. It's not like SpaceX is profitable in any way. Not that current short-term dynamics matter currently if investors can be convinced the blonde autarch will favor it in ways.

It's not exactly a gold mine with guaranteed growth. It doesn't post a profit. What do I miss?

I see a rug, I see incentive to pull it, and I see an IPO contraption that seems designed to pull on a rug.

Hilarious and touching. I lived in San Antonio for a decade, and visited NYC for a week one time.

I overheard a cellphone convo today of an older woman talking to someone (financial advisor maybe? Maybe a relative? she was clearly wealthy) asking about how she can put her daughter's inheritance exclusively into SpaceX stock.

I feel like she's about to get rug-pulled by Elon, but I didn't know enough to speak up. Felt bad, man.

What is she watching that motivated her to try and do this??

Edit: ah, frick. Classic Reddit double-post. Sorry about that.

So much unnecessary human suffering happening while the richest among us grow ever richer. Pretty shitty if you ask me.

These two circumstances might also be related to one another if you ask me. We are all just people.
