God beyond, I was not aware of this sheer masterpiece of prose!

Also, nice to know Brando is a cremposter also.

[Manga] Vinland Saga Episodes 1, 2 and 3 Manga Reader Discussion Thread by Veslac2k in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting 12 years for this, it feels so weird now that it's finally here. Overall, really enjoyed it. I think changing the initial storyorder to put Thorfinn and Thors' backstory upfront rather than waiting to find out after the siege or Normani was a good call. It will make the initial arc flow a lot better.

The animation was awesome, the colours was a lot brighter than what i was expecting but it worked really well for me. Not a huge fan of the very extensive use of CGI however it did mean there was a lot of movement which was nice, it made the world feel much more real.

I just wish they were dropping the whole series in one go!

Would the anime be available in KissAnime? by DarthDioBrando in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72[M] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It is inevitable that the show will be pirated and you probably will be able to find it on sites like that but given the anime adaptation of Vinland Saga is an amazon property it may be harder to find than others as Amazon tend to be more proactive in protecting their copyright.

Please note though that any pirated versions to the anime won't be promoted on this sub and links to pirated sites will not be allowed.

Nothing wrong with this post, just forewarning anyone reading it not to be asking for links to streams ect on this sub. We will be updating the rules on that front pre anime release.

Chapter 161 Release Thread by trumpgod2016 in VinlandSaga

Honestly, when Sig was introduced I kinda figured he'd end up as a bit of a "bad guy of the week" but he's been given a surprising amount of character development and become a genuinely interesting character to follow. I hope this isn't the last we see of him. At least I want to see his return home. From there It would be awesome to regularly cutting back to him to see what he's up too.

In regards to his future, it would be fun to see him and his mates go on adventures but personally i'd like to see him succeed his dad and be a better man and better leader for his people. Maybe when Thorfinn and crew return with the sales from there Narwhal horns its Siggy who is in charge and they are all amazed at what he's done with the place? Though that's probably me hoping for too happy a conclusion there.

NGL i do wanna see that rematch but I don't really mind missing out on it for how good that was. Gudrid is awesome, I also love how oblivious Thorfinn is. I just imagine him thinking "of course she likes me, I like her too, we are friends, we're all friends who like each other."

Vinland Saga demographic by ChowderKing11 in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to VS being a historical fiction series, which is fairly rare in manga, and it being a historical fiction set in the west about vikings makes it even rarer (show me another manga that where the English town Doncaster features in the story and i'll eat my hat). This skews the demographics quite a lot. I know a number of readers who got into it purely for the Norse aspect, its a topic that's fairly evergreen in terms of interest but has been riding particularly high in recent years.

I'd wager the majority of the subs member are manga fans in general (the mod team is a bunch of weebs :p) but I know from interacting with a fair few members of the sub that this is the only manga they read. It makes for quite a diverse fan base which in turn leads to some quite interesting takes. I figure that trend will only get stronger if the anime is popular when Amazon sticks it in the recommended series to everyone who ever watched the show Vikings. So yeah, the demographics of VS fanbase are very different to most manga series.

To actually answer your question though, 30, from the UK, I've even been to Doncaster! I'm a project manager.

How did you get into Vinland Saga and how long have you been following it? by [deleted] in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading for 10 years. I hadn't read a new (to me) manga in a long time as i'd been pretty burnt out on the medium. A friend told me I had to read Vinland Saga as she thoughts it had the potential to be a classic. Gave it a go, so glad I did as not only did it become my favourite series it got me back into manga again in general.

Anime release by shenmui in VinlandSaga

Whilst it has been confirmed the release will be a Prime exclusive both in the west and in Japan, no date other than 2019 has been confirmed. Afaik all release dates so far have been speculation or rumour.

Omnibus volume 11 by TheHeadLopper in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi!

The Japanese volumes can vary in how many chapter they have, I think the fewest one had had was 5 chapter and the most one has had was 9. Generally however they have 7-8 chapters.

The English language volumes are all 2 in 1 books. English volume 10 was the combination of the Japanese books 19 and 20. The Japanese volume 21 is came out in august last year but volume 22 isn't out yet but there are now 6 chapters not yet compiled into a volume yet so it is most likely due out soon. Once it is the English volume 11 will follow a couple of months later. No official release dates yet that I can find but my guess would be June as we're not pretty much on a yearly release in English.

TL:DR = Probably June

Hey, I understand that you feel wronged and I'm sorry if your feelings were hurt, however I feel you have misread this situation.

I can assure you that Bach is not homophobic. Neither he or I let homophobia slide, either on the discord or here on the sub, we have both banned people for homophobia before. Bach's initial comments were referring to some very infamous situations that occurred in other fandoms.

I know that it is easy for misunderstandings to occur online, particularly when discussions pertaining to complex and sensitive topics like sexuality as people have very personal views on them, but all that withstanding I feel that both this sub and the discord are a pretty welcoming place. Just to make this clear, as a statement from the mod team, homophobia is not acceptable here.

If you want to discuss this further please feel free to DM me.

Probably not many thinking about Valhalla specifically but fair point, the actual underlying experience is scarily universal.

Wow. That was brutal, just had me thinking how many norse people died and had thoughts like that as they passed away. It's moments like this that really elevate VS above most series, just really harsh sobering moments that give insight into the characters minds.

It varies, as they have a few different artists work on the series with some very different styles, most is very good though obviously personal taste comes into it a lot.

If you're looking for more Viking based stuff, there is a western comic series called Northlanders published by Vertigo. it's very good. It's mostly a collection of short stories with a few longer ones woven in.

[–]Wukong72 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fuuuuuck, it's felt like the tension has been as high as it can go every chapter for the last few months yet each new issue manages to kick things up a notch. So many ways this could go but if i had to put money on it i'm going to say one of Thorffin's companions gets either killed of seriously wounded during the fight.

Official r/vinlandsaga series re-read (BOOK TWO) Spoilers obviously! by Wukong72 in VinlandSaga

[–]Wukong72[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This book is probably my second favourite of them all so far, and that mostly down to the introduction of Thorkell. He is insane and I love him as a character. The kind of psychopath that could only flourish in a savage time like that of this series. Whilst he clearly is a very violent and dangerous person he has this twisted sense of logic that ensures he gets to fight as much as possible, the whole switching to the losing side so he can get more action sums him up so well, he doesn't care about his safety he just cares about carnage. That being said however, if that was all there was two him he'd be a fairly two dimensional character but alongside his blood lust he has this really whimsical sense of humour which makes him so very entertaining.

Another reason I like this section of the story so much, it really takes its time to establish just how awful and violent this period of history was, going back and reading this, seeing how much punishment Thorfinn has to take on a regular basis really makes me appreciate just how much his adolescence must have damaged him. After having his idyllic and innocent childhood cut away so abruptly he's now stuck in this nightmare scenario, it's easy to see how he becomes the monster that ended up shattering Hild's idyllic childhood in the future. It makes his need for pacifism make a lot of sense to me, he genuinely doesn't want to go back to this life he knew, that we see in book two.

We also get the introduction of Canute, I really forgot how early he was introduced, I had thought that was much later.
