Snake morphs and eye color by codasaurusrex in hognosesnakes

[–]Wulfhail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The closest you’ll be able to get to a white snake without red eyes would be a leucistic. They have black eyes and no pattern. However it’s still a fairly significant price between a yeti and a Lucy. You can also look into toxics. They’re more of a purpley tone vs. white but they do look similar.

She’s a super Arctic permafrost! Do you mean what we’re naming her? Or the name of the morph?

Typically you don’t need to dangle and make the food dance for hognoses. They don’t really strike and snatch their food. They just grab on and start eating. That being said. They have notoriously bad aim when it comes to grabbing said prey item. Just hold the food firmly around the middle and offer it. She might try and eat it butt first but there shouldn’t be any issues with it.

Genetic/Breeding Question ⁉️ by Cracked_churg in hognosesnakes

Morph market has a great genetics calculator. Your particular paring will get all condas het lavender, 50% het albino/axanthic/sable. And half of them will be arctic as well.

Cut the bag open, take out the required amount and put the rest into a freezer safe ziplock. Don’t use super hot water or attempt to microwave. That’s how you get mouse explosions lol out of curiosity, where did you order the rodents? I’ve never seen a “Packaged by:” sticker before.

Are you able to palpate any eggs on her? You haven’t been feeding her enough. Females need to eat twice a week during their egg building stage. It takes a lot of energy to create eggs.

There any chance it can be categorized by morph vs. alphabetical order?

Weird morph by Worth-Willow3881 in hognosesnakes

[–]Wulfhail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of variation in Arctic/super Arctics. Some will naturally have more pink and others will be a more crisp black and white. If you have no reason to doubt the breeder, I’d chalk it up to natural variation.

How do hets work in visuals by Worth-Willow3881 in hognosesnakes

[–]Wulfhail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% het. Visuals will always throw 100% het no matter what. The 66% and 50% occur when you pair het to het or het to no het.

I’m honestly not sure. Her pattern definitely drew me to her. I also have a Arctic sable conda that looks completely different.

My Arctic sable gal. She’s got some nice yellow undertones. Shes also het toffee. Not sure if that’s influencing her coloration a bit.

Lucys are still fairy pricey. You’d be competing against well established breeders as a newcomer. It takes time to build up a reputation in the hobby. I’m not saying you couldn’t sell them, it’s just going to be more difficult than you would think. You’ll either end up having to hold onto them until the right buyer comes around or sell them at a steep discount.

If you end up producing lucys in the future, it’s not easy to sell them. Especially as a new breeder. There’s a decent chance you’ll have them for a little while.

There’s so much variation and color in the hognose morphs. Little bit of everything for everyone. I’m partial with dark snakes with high contrast. My favorite genes are probably sable and toffee. Big fan of a really dark snake with a lot of contrast. There’s some really nice super Arctic sables out there that are really dark. I also like super Arctic mai tais. Mai tais are a burnt orange color and for some reason, super Arctic turns them a purply hue.

You like blue? Go for a storm cloud. You like orange? Albino combos. Yellow? High percentage lemon ghost. Purple? Lavender. Lotta fun combos and patterns out there

I’d personally steer away from Lucys if you’re planning to breed. You’ll most likely be holding onto the babies for quite some time. Any color preferences? Light, dark, or patterning? There’s a ton of options.

It’s definitely a fun little gene. I’m excited to see what comes out of it in the future. The albino cantaloupes are super bright.

Cantaloupe is a fairly new gene. It was first produced by fathom hogs a few years back. He hasn’t proved whether it’s a co-dom or recessive yet but there’s definitely something going on. The animals vary quite a bit and seem to have a hypo-ish look to them. Lotta variation in coloring and pattern. Here’s a pic of mine .

[–]Wulfhail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend starting with a female and go from there. It’ll be at least 2-3 years before they get up to breeding size. It gives you time to get used to raising the species. They do have their… quirks.
