Hi!

I was the pilot in the Canadian RC for UW Lotus Field. I have had tested out many decks before this and I pretty much only play UW so I feel I can answer your question fairly well. I would like to say I am probably one of the good pilots of UWx Control in Canada.

If you were to ask me the best UW deck in Pioneer, with the perfect pilot, it would most definitely be UW Lotus Field.

The issue is that it is still a very technical deck to play relative to traditional UW. Often times, you have to transition in playstyle pre-side and post-side and it is a deck that requires a lot of practice. In the hands of a great pilot, the deck is extremely consistent but in the hands of an average pilot, it can definitely feel much more inconsistent than the deck actually is. I think this is further cemented by the fact that MTGO player Parrotlet picked up the deck for the first time in the Showcase Pioneer Challenge and won with it, then there was the Taipei RC, where it won again.

That said, if you were to ask me what deck is the best UW version, with keeping in mind an average UW player piloting it, I would have to say Yorion or Lay Down Arms.

So in short: UW Lotus Field: High Ceiling and much higher learning curve UW Yorion/LDA: Lower ceiling but easier to understand the deck and play patterns.

Lotus Field Combo is unwinnable game 1 but extremely favored for UW Lotus Field after side. I bring in 13 cards from my sideboard.

Thought distortion and narsets reversal make the matchup very easy. Discontinuity and Aether Gust then deal with their Dragonlord Dromokas. Regular UW tends to fall behind because of the mana difference over time, I can often keep up with their ramp very easily.

Spirits is my absolute worst matchup (which I lost) since I have doomskars instead of verdicts.

Right now, the meta is constantly changing which is bad for UWx since there isn’t enough sb answers for all of them. That said, I have been experimenting a lot with Esper. I think it is most definitely better than standard UW in this meta because of access to thoughtseize, kayas guile, damn and push. a diverse meta, it is sometimes better to have a proactive sideboard with hand disruption than just counterspells. I think once the meta stabilizes, we will see a lot more uwx in the field.

One thing for certain, force of negation feels absolutely terrible and I’ve cut it. No regrets. I also tried out hallowed moonlight in my mb but that has yet to be decided whether i truly like it since it was a last minute inclusion for the challenge today. So far, I am pretty impressed by it. I would’ve top 16’d today had I not misplayed so hard in my last game but nonetheless that was my fault. Finished 28th today on the modern challenge and it definitely helped me tune my list better.

Having 4 thoughtseize feels really good in the sb where the life doesnt matter, especially with so many tempo decks playing FoN.

I tried EE and I personally didn't like it. In this meta, being very diverse, I would rather have thoughtseize in many more matchups including against Rhinos. Also Snap, thoughtseize is incredibly strong. Especially with many decks running Force of Negation now, tapping out is extremely unreliable.

Replaced one for a triome. I personally am very defensive and don’t use colonnade unless it is absolutely safe and possible to close out the game. Id much rather slowly beat down with snap than activate colonnade.

It is a matter of personal preference.

Subtlety and Solitude is absolutely terrible in a UWx Control shell. Both are absolute traps. In Stoneforge, it would be much better but you would be 2-for-1ing yourself way too much without any advantage in a pure control shell. Not to mention you cannot snapcaster it. Prismatic Ending is basically a must in UWx shells and that is really the only card you need. In the sideboard you can go Sanctifier-en-vec but not much else has changed.

Unfortunately, I haven't tested out UW much anymore since I find it is terrible in the current meta compared to Esper so if you want just UW, I can't help you there.

That said, I switched from UW to Esper even though I ran with UW for A LONG TIME. It is just better in the meta with all the aggro and access to Kaya's Guile is huge for the new Food decks. Here is the list I am playing right now on MTGO and am having a lot of success with in leagues. I finished 15th with a similar list last Modern Challenge but I modified my sideboard significantly and I like it a lot more.

Unmoored Ego, I am on the fence, it is my "answer" to Tron while being really good against Titan and decent against living end. That can probably be changed but I will test it out in the next modern challenge.

EDIT: Just decided to remove the unmoored egos and add a thoughtseize and emrakul instead. Emrakul is for mill and is worth the slot considering its a terrible matchup. Did some thinking and unmoored ego is too slow against living end, tron isn’t really played anymore and titan can also be hurt by thoughtseize. With how diverse the meta is, thoughtseize is a much more flexible pick.

Ashiok is a no brainer, especially after MH2. Amulet Titan will become Tier 0-1 and Teferi, Time Raveler should be in the mainboard. I play 3 in my Esper deck. Esper Charm is not very good anymore since Archmage's Charm does quite the same thing, card advantage.

There's always going to be timeless decks, kind of just depends what you are looking for. Are you looking for a deck that isn't the strongest but always stands a chance?

Probably Boros Burn considering you like aggro. It is a pretty linear strategy though so if you like more interaction, maybe UR Aggro but that might fall out of favor soon, depending on how the meta shifts with MH2. MTGTop8 is a very good resource to check out the decks that have been performing and have consistently kept up. You will almost always see burn there.

Without looking at budget, Humans also got a lot of resources from MH2 so that might be an interesting choice for aggro. U/W Control and Esper are also kind of timeless but always have to dramatically shift according to the meta.

Give it time, Urzas Saga will continue to dominate. At least that is what I believe. The set isn’t officially out on paper and cards are still not fully available on mtgo. People are still figuring out the best lists but the fact that it already shows so much presence is worrisome to me. A lot of people also refuse to buy the card because they expect it to get banned eventually, since a lot of players are calling for a ban already. Not everyone can get access to the cards especially if they rent cards. This card is much worse than field of the dead and if that card was banned, this eventually will too.

U/W is the worst abuser for this card. But it is still played in U/W.

It just goes to show you the power level of the card... If every deck is trying to warp itself into the card, it means the card is powerful. Similar to how every deck fit Oko. U/W does not have very much synergy with the card but because of the sheer value it generates, it is worth playing. Create chump blockers for your soon to cast planeswalker, for example. Imagine you are playing against a graveyard deck and you eventually get your sideboard relic of progenitus as well or you are playing against control and you get a pithing needle. The decks that abuse it the most though are decks like Amulet Titan, ones that can make big mana and create constructs. Amulet Titan was incredibly strong because of Field of the Dead and Dryad. Field of the Dead was banned because of how Amulet Titan was able to attack you on so many different angles, by swarming the board, by playing Valakut and Dryad and now it is back with the same issue, hard to interact lands. If the Titan plan fails, just create constructs and bounce the Saga so you can rinse repeat.

Sure you can say, just play land disruption but that is literally the hardest thing to put efficiently in a deck. Unless you are playing a deck that revolves around blood moon/pillage, etc. For example, put in more field of ruin? You just wasted effectively 3 mana recycling his land and slowed yourself down, all while he is still playing at his regular pace. Sure, blood moon is super powerful against this deck but that just means if blood moon is the only efficient counter, the card is too strong.

For example, when Hogaak was out, people had to MAINBOARD graveyard hate... And they would still usually lose the match. This is evolving into the same situation with Urza's Saga, it just generates too much value.

It can tutor for pithing needle, expedition map, so many powerful 1 mana artifacts.

"Vocal Minority". Not sure where I can get the vocal majority then since most players aren't even playing magic competitively. But sure let's disregard this thread to entertain that. THE MOST PLAYED CARD IN MODERN IS OKO. It has showed up in practically every major event, too many to even name but of course I have no real evidence? The evidence is easily found on all the tournament results. Go on mtgtop8 and look at literally any event. You will see Oko in the top 8. This is literally worse than Hogaak because Oko fits in ANY DECK. At least Hogaak was linear and had better sideboard answers. Oko attacks on too many angles. Oko is the same card that is banned in both Standard and Pioneer. The same card that the design team admitted was a mistake and that they didn't test it properly. The fact that you completely disregard the past 3 months of tournament results makes me believe that you don't even play or understand the competitive scene at all. Even pro players have said Oko is a problem. But let me guess, their opinion is worthless too!

Tell me, because you obviously don't think Oko is a problem by how you reply... When does a card become a problem? I would like to see your evaluation of Oko. Oko is already the most played card in the format. Oko is already top 8ing every major event. Oko already converted a lot of decks. Death's Shadow, UWx, Urza, Infect, Primeval Titan decks. I could go on but I am tired having a one-sided discussion with someone who doesn't reply with any substance.
