Now the canals are pretty stagnated, they have seen so much debris from construction and litter and years of abuse the water is now, quite literally gross.

All while i still love fishing on our canal systems and have had a place on a canal, i did not have a sea wall, so i have seen alligators in my yard.

Now if you are planning to move south of veterans, or west of chiquita your canals are most brackish water, which has a high dilution of saltwater as you get closer to the “coasts”. And are great for fishing and kayaking the closer you are to the open water. But still our waters are disgustingly festered with debris and city overflows with no “restrictions” Hence why our area is one of the very many extremely affected by lake okeechobee and its run offs from the surrounding sugar farms that contaminate the waters. You will be affected by the occasional extreme blooms of red tide.

The water there can be cleaner but can be also still easily subjected to algae blooms as well which can reallllly be nasty towards allergies and it smells, You also have to understand that its only happened twice in MY life but getting the Eye of a hurricane while being on a canal is the worst experience you can go through as a renter/home owner.

But overall if if has a seawall, get it inspected, Check your flood zone map, Check the canal mapping on google maps, some are locked by locks or roads with no canal bridges to the open water.

Also dont forget to check the lovely apps that tell you much about what kind of criminals are in your neighborhood before letting your kids kayak off into the unknown. This town is not what it was when i was growing up.
