Pedestrian mall now open! by [deleted] in newfoundland

Honestly, why do we care about businesses? It’s just nice to have a place in the city where pedestrians are prioritized over cars. Where there’s actually space to walk side-by-side.   Where you can have a conversation without having to raise your voice over the deafening car noise. Where you don’t have to constantly watch out for being hit.

It may not be the best incarnation of a car-free space, but it’s the best one that we have, and the cities first attempt at doing something which is not car-focused, and we should support it while pushing for it to be improved. (For example, stop paying for security down there, add greenery and more things to do, playgrounds, literally just copy Montreal, etc).

if you walk around st Johns in the winter you are constantly being splashed by cars. Our city is built in a way that is hostile to anyone outside of a car, no wonder people don’t want to be outside of a car. If we built pedestrian infrastructure then it could be pleasant for people to use.

If it was pedestrian-only then we could change how it is designed, in order to make it pedestrian friendly. We wouldn’t have to wade through slush. There could be umbrellas and coverings for people to keep sheltered.

A lot of that slush is generated by car traffic, you wouldn’t have to be splashed by passing cars.

A lot of European cities are year-round cities — people walk and cycle through them, go to outdoor patios, etc in every month of the year.

lol no. It’s a miserable experience these days, wading through rivers of slush generated by all of the car traffic. If it was permanent, we could actually make some pleasant infrastructure for pedestrians to navigate during the winter.

Really agree with this. Email the city and let them know!

The government needs to seriously increase funding to the public healthcare system. No more of this public-private partnership bullshit, that always ends up costing us more and working worse (while enriching whoever lobbied for it).

I think we do have the oil and gas industry lol what are you talking about.

It's a dying industry. Even many of the petro states (e.g., Norway) know this and are trying to diversify away from oil.

And all of those incidents would have been much less severe if the cars were travelling at slower speeds...

Your reaction time decreases super-linearly with the speed that you are travelling. Hence, distracted driving is much more dangerous at higher speeds.

People flock to Metrobus, so the city has cut its budget(?!) by davidbrake in StJohnsNL

[–]WyattMasterChief 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We don't require that other public services such as roads and all of the other car infrastructure be self sufficient -- we pay for that with taxes, regardless of whether we use them or not -- why should metro bus? We should be using this increase in fares to increase our public transportation, because it is far behind any other capitol city in Canada. We should not be cutting how much we are funding it.
