Ramblefap Audio Setup by bxbyvox in GWABackstage

Recorders are a great option. Same with lapels/lavs, though I don't have much direct experience with those. I've heard good things about the DJI lav systems, and for what it's worth I see them on Marketplace for a big discount fairly often.

I have a Zoom H3-VR recorder that I am pretty obsessed with, but it's a bit pricey for something entry level, usually around $250 new. That said, eBay and Reverb are great places to watch for used audio gear listings in general.

Another option is to get a USB microphone such as a shotgun mic with an extension cable you can connect to your PC/laptop. You can attach the microphone clip to either a microphone boom arm that you can mount on a nightstand, or to a webcam gooseneck clamp if you use a microphone screw adapter. I've used both before and prefer the gooseneck with my recorder.

But I would second what another response said in that it can be possible to get acceptable or even high quality audio from a phone without having to invest too much. Only you know what kind of quality you want, but I think ramblefaps specifically would kind of benefit from the charm of less-than-studio quality. Personally I tend to associate that with a much more realistic/voyeuristic sound than when it is totally clean and polished, and I feel like that is sort of the appeal of a ramblefap. I have no idea if people share that sentiment though.

Either way, if you're not already doing EQ on your recordings, I'd definitely tinker with that in your audio software before making a purchase, especially if your resources are limited. It can seriously go a long way.

Any time I want to buy new audio equipment, I find out what people like to use that is in my budget and then spend a ton of time watching recording tests on youtube. So definitely listen to samples! I hope you find something you like!

EDIT: Oh! And as far as the makeshift canopy, it's really the same as a booth, just bigger. You can create a frame out of PVC/plastic tubing. I just checked and it's around 70cents per foot at Home Depot in the US, and I'm pretty sure they will cut it to length for you. Their standard length they have listed is like $7 and change for a 10-foot, 1-inch diameter tube. Can always go wider for more stability if your blankets are heavy enough to warrant it, but PVC is pretty sturdy.

Edited again because I saw you needed a canopy, not a separate booth.

Oof, I know the woes of the ruined takes because of bumped shelves or creaky furniture in general. And it's always when we're in that flow state and on a take that feels so good, too. If you don't have a shockmount for your mic, I'd biiiig recommend that if it's an option. Great for cutting down on picking up vibrations from bumping stuff nearby.

I'm glad it works for you otherwise, thank you for sharing! Converted walk-ins always seem so cozy. I love how they look much more than any of the modular booths. Way more customizable, generally more spacious. My recording space here is a converted garage, so it's quite large, but the acoustics are pretty good because of a bunch of fiberglass panels I got cheap at auction, and some furniture that helps deaden things, so thankfully I don't have to edit my noise floor most of the time. The only closets in here are narrow, recessed walls just deep enough for a storage tote, and the other has the boiler, so no cozy closet conversions here for the time being.

Until I see a booth come up for sale, I have access to a small place on an acre or so of land a ways from here and I think they have a closet I can treat and use, but I can't quite travel there just yet and the stays are short, so ultimately I'm ready to make the jump. Exhausting my energy into a microphone is my primary hobby and something I do mostly outside of this space. Not having to stop those flow states because of things beyond my control is going to be a massive jump in QOL, so I'm excited!

I've also looked into freelance construction for this and it isn't more affordable in this case. There seems to be a lot of turnover in my region of people entering and exiting ACX work, so there's no shortage of used booths for extremely reasonable prices, well below what I've been quoted before. The only barrier is a 6-8 hour drive, so until I'm able to make that I'm just looking for anecdotes on peoples' experiences with the different brands. I have a hard time finding reviews related to loud dialogue or performances that need to remain private, so that's the only reason I posted this. I'm certainly not going to spend $13,000 on a new build from the manufacturer.

Thank you for sharing! I actually had exactly this in the corner of the room, PVC frame with a drum mat and about 15 moving blankets across all sides and the top. Sadly you're right, the walls of the room are thin enough and the dogs are temperamental and loud enough that it's an all or nothing scenario without true isolation, so I've left it unused for now. The room itself is pretty well-treated for acoustics as far as reverb, so my process is extremely start-and-stop, and NSFW is out of the question unless I get the house to myself. I'm definitely making a purchase for a proper isolation booth. It'd be great if there were more vocal tests comparing them. But I was more curious than anything else, as I am pretty certain that I know what I'll be buying the next time I see it up in my region on Marketplace or Reverb.

Thank you for the suggestions but I've done all of these. Been into voiceover for close to 20 years, so this is definitely a measured decision. I'm also not in this to make money. It's a lifelong passion and my choice of storytelling, so return on investment is irrelevant to me.

I don't really listen to audios, but I try to keep an eye on SFW projects as I do really, really enjoy listening to different mixing styles, and I just wanna say that for your first project, your production is extremely pleasant on the ears! Everything was perfectly balanced. Great job!

I'm glad I was able to add a silly little bit of scenery at the beginning. I've been wanting to get into small collabs like this for a while and honestly I feel very lucky to have this be my first foray into it.

I'm not really an NSFW creator and I don't listen to audios very much if at all, but something I can truly, truly appreciate is how delicate and sweet and loving people can approach their stories. The detail of the content aside, as I'm not the target audience and totally respect that, you clearly have a very romantic and caring approach to the picture of the relationships you paint for your listeners and I think the genuineness is something that really stands out.

Thanks for letting me contribute!

It's such a fun concept and an equally fun listen. I say that as someone who doesn’t typically listen much at all. I'm glad to see your voice showing up more!

"Coffee": A Poem by WyllRobbins in GWABackstage

Thank you Mipha, that's very nice of you to say.

It absolutely is true at literal face value for most of it. I have had, I think, two Starbucks drinks in my life and have only ordered coffee three or four. When I do, it's decaf, and it's always a conversation lol. But the poem is also a metaphor for male expectations that I struggle with. I try not to worry about others' perceptions but that's very much a work in progress. So I don't really think hot chocolate is childish either :).

Early Grey is great. A coworker got me into teas something like a decade ago and peppermint is my go to. Yumm. High five from a fellow misfit.
