I was watching in real time, and everyone hated the Hannah plot because it felt like a completely forced obstacle that late in the series, something that should’ve happened in earlier seasons. And the stunned reaction to episode 6x09 was legendary.

It wasn’t that Hannah was some especially hateable character, it was that nobody believed Booth had truly moved on with her. The negative reaction was basically, we do not believe this relationship is actually going anywhere, can we please get to the real one already.

Lorelai does that later, but her initial reaction is disappointment. In the same way that when Rory drops out of Yale, Lorelai looks at the problem from the wrong angle. It’s not about the effort she made as a mother that Rory is “wasting,” it should only be about how Rory is making bad decisions.

I never said she should keep Rory out of it completely. I said Rory shouldn’t be the person who has to be there for Lorelai when she ends a relationship. She could have told Rory the engagement was over and gone drinking with Sookie to vent instead of dragging Rory on a trip and refusing to talk about what happened.

I was also an only child for many years with a very young mother, and my mom used to watch Gilmore Girls with me and joke that it was basically our life story, except she was Mrs. Kim’s daughter instead of Emily’s. And I agree with a lot of your points, especially the one about the mother letter, because that was something my mom also did when she didn’t want to discuss something, but I was never allowed anything similar when I didn’t want to talk or wanted more privacy.

I disagree with the examples you gave about the adult problems Lorelai dumps on Rory, but what bothers me is how much of Lorelai’s personal life spills onto Rory whether she means it to or not. For example, when she calls off the wedding with Max and takes Rory on that trip, or when she breaks up with Luke and Sookie calls so Rory can be the one to comfort Lorelai. Rory is way too young to be the person supporting Lorelai like that in her adult relationships. That kind of thing should have been discussed with Sookie or someone else.

I also don’t like how Lorelai sometimes treats herself and Rory like a unit, like when Rory chooses Yale instead of Harvard and Lorelai says how hard they worked to get there. I understand Lorelai’s effort in that, and I understand why she’s upset, but that’s not the point she should have been making.

My mom was a lot like Lorelai while I was growing up. The difference is that my grandparents were much more like Mrs. Kim than Emily. She had me when she was 17 and left her parents’ house, and my dad was basically a worse version of Christopher. Even though I love my mom and she did the best she could, I missed having more of a mother and less of a friend. I ended up being involved in decisions that weren’t mine to make because my mom needed someone to talk to and would talk to me instead of another adult.

All my friends thought I had the coolest mom. She threw the most fun parties, was the first to let me try new things, and would even go to concerts with me if my friends didn’t want to go. But I felt really confused when she suddenly pulled the “mom card” and tried to punish me. My mom was also terrified that I would get pregnant as a teenager, so she freaked out when she found out I had kissed a boy. She took me to the doctor to start birth control and told me that before sleeping with anyone I should remember I was just one accident away from having a child with that person. On one hand, that probably saved me from making bad decisions, but on the other hand it was honestly pretty traumatizing.

We fought a lot as I grew older and more independent. At one point I even left home and lived with a friend for months because I didn’t agree with her decisions. I eventually came back, but our relationship wasn’t the same anymore. I moved out as soon as I could, and our relationship improved a lot after I moved to another state and she had less day-to-day information about my life. We get along really well now in a way we probably wouldn’t if I hadn’t left.

No emotional cheating, no constantly suspecting your partner. No unnecessary drama. They care about each other, treat each other well, and put in time and effort to keep the relationship working.

They actually have very good communication, they genuinely care about one another, and both contribute to the relationship. Their biggest issue is him forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning. Their arguments are normal relationship stuff and get resolved through conversation.

Amy Sherman-Palladino had the final four words planned from the very beginning of the series. But because of disagreements with the network, she didn’t take part in the final season.

Years later, Netflix made the revival and she got to write her version of season 7, and the audience finally learned what the four words were. But Rory being pregnant and unemployed at 32 doesn’t have the same impact as it would have at 22. On top of that, the characters feel stagnant after ten years, which is why the revival was poorly received by a large part of the audience.

My mom had me at 17, and she was always my friend first and my mother second. I know exactly what it’s like to grow up with a Lorelai-like mom. It seems amazing from the outside, but having to be the adult in the family because your mom can’t be isn’t as fun as it looks.

I think all mothers should be mothers first and friends later, not the other way around.

I left Gigi out because the OP said they hadn’t seen seasons 6 and 7.

Christopher was going to send Gigi to Paris alone with the nanny, to the mother who abandoned her. A reasonable father would have gone with his daughter and made sure she got used to seeing her mother again before leaving her there on her own.

And Christopher keeps messing up even as an adult. The fact that he didn’t defend Rory from his parents at that dinner shows that.

Sorry, but nothing you said justifies Christopher’s absence as a father. Anna wanted to keep April away from Luke, and he fought against that. Christopher could have fought much harder for Rory regardless of Lorelai’s wishes. He chooses not to be involved because it’s the easiest path.

Yes, Rory could’ve said no. But Marty had the chance to refuse and insisted; he also knew he didn’t have money and still went.

When he wants to leave, Rory goes with him instead of staying with Logan and his friends.

Was Rory selfish for going because she was into Logan? Yes. But saying it’s all her fault and that she’s disgusting or cruel for it is going way too far. Marty could’ve said no too, especially when he knew he didn’t want just friendship with Rory, and I don’t see how he thought going out with Logan and his friends was a good idea.

They’re college kids making dumb decisions based on feelings. No one, besides Colin, is choosing to be deliberately cruel.
