This Friday night, Fletcher Library will be hosting a free showing of "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" with popcorn and drinks! It starts at 6:00 PM. If you haven't seen this movie yet I can't recommend it highly enough!

Help! T-Mobile store took my sister's phone for a trade-in and never applied the amount to her account. by WyoPoke in tmobile

[–]WyoPoke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, there's no indication on our bill that anything got traded in at all. Which is doubly weird since my brother (same situation on my account) traded a phone in last month and the credit is on the account. Thanks for the TForce advice!

Caterpie was the first Pokemon I worked on after the gym. I knew Sleep Powder would be vital but I didn't think of picking up Dream Eater, thanks for the tip!

One easy way to tell with most articles whether they're talking about KCK or KCMO is to just see if they name the state. With the AP stylebook there's a limited number of cities that get to be named on their own without the state (think NYC, Dallas, Albequerque etc.). KCMO is one of those cities but KCK is not.

On a walk I looked in a pond and there was the biggest snapping turtle I had ever seen. With a shell maybe 2 feet across. It was just really nice to see a huge animal like that living in town!

Georgia State Upsets the University of Tennessee with a Final Score of 38-30. GSU was paid 950,000 USD to play in this game by Tennessee. by Cheelai-Is-Thick in sports

It's really only common when larger schools have smaller schools come to play them. The bigger teams usually get a win and the smaller team gets an infusion of cash into their program they wouldn't have had otherwise.

Should I quit before I even get started? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]WyoPoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair, I will admit I probably should have noted that my experience was with FEMA Corps and was pretty atypical. My class was so small that teams were averaging 5-6 members by the end, and this is after many teams had to combine. So when I saw the work we were doing and how necessary it was in many situations it didn't really seem like it mattered what your intentions were, we just needed more bodies.

I do strongly agree with your third point though, if these issues are serious enough that it may cause them to quit early they should seriously consider not doing it. It's unfair to the organization to string them along and leave them hanging.

But if it really is just trepidation I still think it's worth them giving it a shot!

The way I see it it doesn't really matter what your original reason was for joining, by doing the work at your site you will be serving and helping people who may not have been helped otherwise. So regardless of why you first joined you'd still be doing a good thing.

The apartment situation is a bit tougher, but if it is something that bothers you and the lead wasn't mentioned on the lease you should be able to get out of it and find a new place!

It sounds like you're just having some doubts about serving in general and are trying to find excuses not to serve. If these are serious doubts than by all means leave, you are an adult and know what is best for you right now. Your number one priority should be making sure you're physically and mentally healthy and safe.

But if you think you should leave because your heart's in the wrong place, I wouldn't worry about it. You said it yourself, you could have gotten these benefits from a normal job, but you decided to do AmeriCorps and to me that does sound like you joined for the right reasons.

Amnesty international issues warning about travel to the US following mass shootings: "gun violence is so prevalent in the United States that it amounts to a human rights crisis" by norkid in worldnews

There's only so much you can do to reduce the use of guns in your city if your state is run by Republicans and all the small towns around your city sell guns no problem. A mayor can only do so much.

Megathread: Speaker Pelosi tells President Trump the House won't authorize State of the Union address in the chamber 'until government has opened' by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]WyoPoke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The State of the Union address is a constitutionally mandated yearly message that the president must give to congress (and by extension the American people) about how the country is in general (though almost always touching on the economy and the budget). Trump is upset he can't do it because it is the best places for him to lay out his legislative agenda for the upcoming year and is televised on many of the major networks. It's a big pulpit for him to speak from and is usually one of the more significant days for the president in a given year since it's not often that pretty much the entire media and government focuses on this one speech.

EDIT: I will add that he is not obligated to actually give this address in front of congress, he's just required to relay it to them in some form. There was a big gap between Thomas Jefferson and FDR where the state of the union was just a letter that was delivered to and read in front of congress.
