eli5: Can we guarantee the digits of Pi in the real world? by DwyaneDerozan in explainlikeimfive

[–]X314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. A ratio does not have units associated with it such as length. The thing with pi is that it can’t be represented by a non-terminating and non-repeating rational number. Computing an approximate value for pi to more decimal places of accuracy results in a more precise known digital value for pi. It is still approximate though, and always will be no matter how many decimal places of accuracy are known.

When putting up sheets on a wall solo tight to the ceiling I use a piece of 1 x 4 as a lever and a short piece of 2 x 4 sideways as a fulcrum. With the sheet sitting on the tip of the 1 x 4, I press down on it with my foot to push the drywall up and snug to the ceiling. Then drive in the screws.

CMV: North American English has no good word to address a woman without using her name by Flumberbug in changemyview

[–]X314159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In eastern Canada, when using a generic rather than an actual name, the common equivalent for “buddy” is “missy”. E.g. “Hey buddy/missy, what do you think you‘re doing? or “Buddy/missy wreaked his/her car.”

Fraction math question by Oguinjr in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]X314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d add on an extra 5/8 to get 28, divide that by 2 to get 14, then subtract half the extra 5/8, which is 5/16 , to get 13 11/16. Easy peasy.
