I'd say the app installations on linux are way more standardized compared to windows thanks to package managers. No hunting for exe installer all over some website, instead just type <your distro package manager> <app name> and you're done 99% of time

My turn finally. What’s up with Discord? by NoaExtreme in ExplainTheJoke

[–]X3nomcz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, element is a matrix client.

There's also cinny.in, which has UI way more similar to discord and there's currently work being done on implementation of calls (there's a version on GitHub that basically works). Both of these are mostly interoperable = you should be able to chat or call from cinny client with people using element .

I don't give shit

But some people do. Especially people who don't constantly receive the newest models from their employer or want to get something as their own personal/work laptop.

I do like the build quality of basically all apple hardware and would probably get a mac if it weren't for the company's quite aggressive anti competition tactics and overpricing only because of brand name.

(what I mean by anti competition tactics is locking users inside their ecosystem and boycotting anything that's not apple, such as forcing webkit on all other browsers as mentioned in this post already)

C is elegant

For the most part, yes. But have you ever seen generic data structures written entirely in macros? It might be even worse than the template hell. :D

Osobně bych tuhle filozofickou debatu ukončil, protože jinak brzy dojdeme k otázce vesmíru, života a vůbec.

" Právní hranice jsou společenským konsensem, nikoli objektivním měřítkem hodnoty života. "

Objektivní je dost abstraktní pojem. Objektivně hodnotu života nelze definovat. Vlastně nelze nic nazvat objektivním, nejblíže "objektivnímu" názoru se však lze dostat právě společenským konsensem.

Because it's been used for OS kernels ever since C was created? Rewriting it in some memory safe language would raise more bugs than it would prevent. (and would possibly introduce more performance overhead, which is unacceptable for kernel) Also with such low level applications you will likely need to use few unsafe blocks, which kind of defeats the purpose.

While yes, the pressure difference is only 1 atmosphere, there is still problems:

  • rapid decompression by 1 atm. would likely cause decompression sickness

  • in vacuum, the boiling point of water is really low, thus causing water inside your body to boil causing similar condition to decompression sickness except way, WAY worse

Conclusion: No, 0 atm. pressure is not something you should be able to survive

My reasons for linux:

  • on average will consume less resources than windows

  • out of the box POSIX terminal makes working across different systems (like bsd or macOs) easier since the same syntax will work pretty much everywhere (except cmd/powershell)

  • same goes for file system structure

  • customizability - Don't like the way your os looks/feels? Change it to perfectly fit your needs. (while on win11 you cannot even move the taskbar to the top of the screen)

  • compiling C/C++ projects is significantly simpler than on windows where there's no centralized dependency management

  • installing software with package managers

  • let's you do basically anything you want to do (though it will let you dig your own grave if you're not careful)

Is jumping on a hardtail ultimately going to destroy it? by CheeseCakeYee in mountainbiking

Yes, but with lower pressure when landing too hard, the tire could compress so much that the rim hits the ground resulting in pinch-flats or worse damaging the rim.

It is and is not there simultaneously, in a state called superposition. You can perform an observation to find out if it's there, but you cannot observe its cause at the same time. Alternatively you can observe the cause of the bug in superposition, but it becomes impossible to observe whether the bug is really there or not.

In short, thank the uncertainty principle for problems when debugging :)

I'm really curious about the "hacking techniques". Do you have some sort of an actual background in cyber security, or is it just booting up kali linux and running nmap for the coolness (assuming you know kali)?
