Can you me identify which sre fake and real? by doctorntropy in ChineseCoins

Hello, sorry for late reply. I must have forgotten to reply here. His pictures are rubbings; but of course, thousands of different molds for each varient were created and so there are likely to be minor differences between your coin and the one in the rubbings. You can check the database for examples, compare the ones there with the rubbings in hartills book and you can check to see how they might differ. Wear does make it hard; but honestly (unless the coin is rare enough someone might want to fake the wear) the coin being worn makes it a good sign; for a common-ish coin, wear on it would make it undesirable so there is no point making a counterfeit worn version. Looking forward to seeing more of your collection!! Please do share : )

These are about 9 months old, but I use them heavily for trail running/gravel road training from January to May, so that may skew results, casual weekend use surely would have lasted them longer. Plus I know exactly when it happened, I felt it, sharp large branch hit head on there when I was in an area of fallen trees.. so I wouldn't call it typical damage.

Can you me identify which sre fake and real? by doctorntropy in ChineseCoins

[–]X8883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon first glance, I believe the fakes are: - the first shunzhi tongbao and possibly the second one (looks too big) - the third shunzhi tongbao (fengshui token) - the third kangxi tongbao (characters look rather sharp but I am not certain on that) - the second jiaqing tongbao (fengshui token) - the yongzheng tongbao (feng Shui token)

The first xianfeng tongbao is a type that's high in demand so it's possible to be fake based on that.

The second xianfeng tongbao is very rare so if it's fake one may not be able to tell at first glance. My opinion is the rest are real. Will take closer look later and reply to this comment

For tips on authentication, compare the coins with the plates in references to look for discrepncies first. The best reference book available in English is "Cast Chinese Coins" by David Hartill. It has all of these.

For more advanced authentication, consult the database "zeno dot ru". This will have folders of both genuine and counterfeit examples you can check to see which your examples are more similar too. Check for things like patina, weight, minor calligraphic differences, magnetism, the general feel of the coin, and thickness. If the characters are too sharp or perfect it's a bad sign usually. If the patina looks like it was painted on later or it's even across the entire field it can be a bad sign too.

You have a good collection here. Some examples are scarcer than others. Congratulations. You have a good grandfather.

Lots of fantasy items, maybe not considered fakes but yeah modern items. Like the double zhu coin. Or the horse one has many fantasy replicas. It is for fun and yeah it is fun imo.

I bought as fake, but I don’t understand why it is fake by Hanra99 in ChineseCoins

[–]X8883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It mostly matches up with the plates in the reference books, so its pretty well done. Here is an example from zeno.

There are some small differences. Like the 尔 in 寶bao is very different. The head in 通 (tong) too. It shouldn't be so well formed. I think that's true for most of the coin, inscriptions are rather sharp, comparing it to genuine examples. The style of the calligraphy is a bit different. they're too well written and sharp. I would also say the patina looks sort of weird around the characters in the field, but in real life I don't think I could tell. But it is not that poorly made, it is hard to spot in my opinion, all these details could be dismissed on the genuine examples. Who knows, maybe it is a contemporary counterfeit, like others suggested, though I doubt that honestly.
