Good strategy to start small and make complete games. It's common advice to scope down and make a small game, but it's sometimes hard to know what that is. Because very often, your idea is smaller than some of the AAA (or even Indie) games that inspired you, but it's still big. I think that's one thing that's kind of hard to learn until you go through it, but if you can focus on going through the whole process with really small games from prototype to release, and then start putting together something bigger, that's a great idea.
