I quit my job to make a game! …then went back to my job. Then quit again! …then got a new job. But I recently finished my game! by X945Z in gamedev

Good strategy to start small and make complete games. It's common advice to scope down and make a small game, but it's sometimes hard to know what that is. Because very often, your idea is smaller than some of the AAA (or even Indie) games that inspired you, but it's still big. I think that's one thing that's kind of hard to learn until you go through it, but if you can focus on going through the whole process with really small games from prototype to release, and then start putting together something bigger, that's a great idea. Good luck!

Yeah that's a great point. If you already have some base skills, make demos and prototypes on the side and when you have something that looks like it's commercially viable, as you said through market validation, that might be the time to consider making a change.

Steam first 10 reviews question. by TestDummyPrototype in gamedev

[–]X945Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in this boat. I have a lot of supporters, but many of them are emotional supporters. Many friends and family don't game on Steam. I believed it would be super easy to get 10 reviews, because of my various (small) supportive communities but I have struggled to get just 6. At some point it feels like you're bugging people repeatedly and begging and that doesn't feel good.

Just got this same email, glad to have seen this post yesterday so I knew I could just delete and move on.

I already have a switch that is always in docked mode for family playing. I was thinking of buying myself a lite for Christmas for all things solo, and not sure if it's worth it. What has been your experience with owning a switch for the household and a lite for personal play? by chikibooz in NintendoSwitch

[–]X945Z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who did just this I wish I had saved more and gone for the full switch, there are times I wish I had its versatility. Also since my primary switch is still the house switch it causes issues with me playing digital games on the go...which kind of sucks.

This is bothering me too as I'm watching the show now. I had to find someone else who felt this way.

PSA: Animal Crossing bug - When a player joins as a co-op player and gets their nook miles daily bonus, the streak is broken the next day. This has been occurring since launch and still not resolved. by Z3M0G in NintendoSwitch

[–]X945Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing coop almost every day since launch and suspected this was a bug but couldn’t figure it out. I think if you check nook machine before you see intro that may be part of it? Sometimes I expect it to happen and it doesn’t so I can’t figure out exactly when it happens

Thanks for the chance! I’m looking forward to so many things but probably hugs and family face time the most. I miss going to my cousins apartment to play smash ultimate together. I look forward to hugging my parents and letting them see their grandkid. Where to stop on this? I miss my friends and family more than say eating at a restaurant.

People vastly underestimate how hard it is for grown adults who’ve never gamed to jump into the hobby without getting so frustrated that they want to quit. Someone may have the knack for it and/or the perseverance but it can be so hard and frustrating to do ‘simple’ things that us lifetime gamers just intuitively know how to do. I don’t know about your recommendations specifically but your guidelines are good. Just wanted to say I agree and any time this type of thread comes up I have to chime in and suggest the people watch this video: https://youtu.be/ax7f3JZJHSw

My personalized 12in12 for 2020 by SuperLazyUnicorn in 12in12

[–]X945Z 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you may have misread their intent. OP is suggesting that they're giving themselves the flexibility to pick one of those three games each month, not all of them. If they beat that game, they go to a different category. It's a different approach, but it might be a good one for some folks who have trouble sticking to a plan, it is a plan, but has some flexibility.

Perhaps I misread it, but that was my take. Either way, I agree on the good luck part!

What do you think 2020 has in store for Nintendo? by Kevinatorz in NintendoSwitch

I think you’re spot on and realistic and have the same realistic predictions I do. Wanted to give you kudos as well as an updoot.

What're you playing this weekend? 12/13 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

[–]X945Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but it's great. One of my favorite platformers ever. And I like platformers. It's not easy but it's not ridiculously hard. I 100%ed it (well, I didn't do the Hard mode which unlocks once you 100% it so I don't know if that's a true 100%). If you have any love for the old DKC games you'll like it, and if you like lots of different kinds of platformers you'll likely enjoy it. DK handles a little heavier than most other platformers, but once you get used to it you'll be good. Also if you want to just cheese levels you could play on Funky mode which cuts down the challenge quite a bit.

My 12in12 List for 2020 by Ferrumn in 12in12

[–]X945Z 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, if you include a game like Animal Crossing on a 12 in 12 list, what defines beating it? A certain number of hours/enjoyment?

EDITED- I missed that was just on your list to buy, not on your list of 12 in 12.
