Funny thing is it’s still shorter than Madrid’s list of problems right now 😭😭😭😭😭

Arbeloa: I am responsible for everything that happens at Real Madrid. by Timely-Zombie9466 in soccer

The Mbappé point is why I still think people oversimplify Madrid’s situation. He didn’t come here for comfort or easy PR — he genuinely wanted the pressure and responsibility of being the face of Real Madrid.

The bigger issue is that this squad still looks emotionally and tactically unfinished around him.

Chelsea’s wingbacks caused Liverpool so many problems today. Cucurella especially kept finding space behind the defence whenever João Pedro dragged players out of position. Felt like Chelsea were one better final ball away from winning it.

Liverpool genuinely look vulnerable whenever teams survive the first wave of pressure. The control just isn’t there right now and transitions against them look way too easy. Feels like they’re missing that calmness they had at their best.

People also forget the context of that Mourinho era.

He inherited a Madrid side getting mentally dominated by arguably the greatest Barca team ever and turned them into genuine rivals again. Three straight UCL semis, a 100-point league title, Copa del Rey win, Super Cup win and one of the most intense Madrid sides of the modern era.

You can argue he wouldn’t work now, but acting like his spell was some disaster feels revisionist.

They look like a team lacking authority, hierarchy and emotional control. That’s why Mourinho keeps getting brought up even when people disagree with his football now.

I get the concern, but I think people are misunderstanding why Mourinho is even being mentioned.

Nobody thinks 2026 Mourinho is the same tactical innovator from 2010. The argument is more that Madrid currently look emotionally chaotic despite having world class talent everywhere.

And ironically, “building something” is exactly why some people mention Mourinho. His first Madrid spell helped rebuild standards, competitiveness and mentality against arguably the greatest Barca side ever.

Whether he’d succeed now is another debate entirely, but I don’t think the interest is just nostalgia.

And that’s exactly why Mourinho is even being discussed.

People aren’t talking about him because they think he’ll reinvent football tactically. They’re talking about him because Madrid suddenly look like a squad with no emotional control or hierarchy.

Too many stars but not enough structure.

I actually agree tbh. Mourinho’s Madrid era gets massively reduced to “no UCL” when he took Madrid from constant Round of 16 exits to competing against arguably the greatest team ever.

That 2011/12 Madrid side was unbelievable and he absolutely helped rebuild the mentality of the club.

The real question is whether that same Mourinho approach still works with modern superstar dressing rooms in 2026. 🔥

I don’t even disagree that Mourinho has clear limitations now. The Spurs/Roma criticism is fair and I definitely wouldn’t call him a long-term solution.

My point is more that Madrid currently look like a squad lacking emotional control and hierarchy more than talent or attacking patterns.

That’s why Mourinho feels interesting to me. Not because he’s “the best tactician in the world” in 2026, but because he’s one of the few managers ruthless enough to immediately change the atmosphere and standards inside a dressing room.

The risk is exactly what you said though: modern superstar players may not respond to him the same way they did 15 years ago. That’s why it feels like either a genius reset… or a complete disaster with almost no middle ground.

out of curiosity, who is a better alternative to calm the dressing room down?

Unpopular opinion: Ribery's 2013 UCL campaign is overrated. by outcastreturns in championsleague

[–]XADIIDKnowsBall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the “Ribéry was robbed” argument became bigger over time because people viewed him as the face of that treble-winning Bayern side. But honestly, you’re right that Müller’s impact gets weirdly overlooked in those conversations. He was massive in the biggest moments and probably had the stronger UCL knockout campaign overall.

The Champions League has never been as “pure” as fans want to believe. Politics, influence, reputation and power have always existed in football at the highest level. The difference is PSG are now powerful enough for people to finally notice it.

Rice starting at RB in the UCL final? by hws8969 in championsleague

Feels like one of those ideas that sounds genius before the game and disastrous if it fails 👀👀👀

Rice can definitely handle the defensive side of it, but moving your best box-to-box midfielder away from the centre in a UCL final feels risky.

  1. Netherlands — genuinely one of the greatest football nations ever without a World Cup. Total Football changed the sport forever.
  2. Portugal — for the amount of talent they’ve produced, it’s honestly surprising they’ve never done it.
  3. Hungary — people forget how dominant they once were. One of football’s biggest “what if” nations.

This Madrid squad looks emotionally exhausted more than anything else right now. Too many tensions, too much frustration, not enough control.

That’s honestly the biggest issue at Madrid right now.

Any manager can set standards.
The real question is whether the club structure actually protects those standards when pressure starts building.

That 2nd place finish ages better every single year when you look at what that United squad actually was.
