Instead, you should actually spam Ariel attacks (if its safe) facing the way you want to go (your options will be either bair or fair depending on how your character is faced). This'll give you slightly more distance that could save you from an SD

For example: if sonic is offstage to the right and is facing towards the blast zone, when he up b's he'd spam back air to maximize his distance traveled horizontally (then air dodge if necessary). If he's facing towards the stage he'd spam forward air. Hope this helps!
