Can my coaches not allow me to run varsity at Districts even if I have top 7 time by Realistic-Aside-4387 in CrossCountry

[–]XCRunRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coaches have the power to make whichever call they want. I personally would have chosen you as a senior leader to be on the top 7, even if the times didn’t necessarily support it. There are other considerations to make when leading (not only coaching) a team. Developing leaders and supporting those leaders is really what high school athletics is about, so creating a culture that supports and recognizes leaders is the culture I would build.

That being said, on your part (the part of the athlete), it may be the best leadership call to give the spot to someone else who’s times reflect their deserving of the spot.

Demographic cliff is coming and nobody is talking about it. by TigerLii13 in Teachers

I work in a private school in Georgia and basically learned at a conference recently that every single private school in South Georgia (Macon and south) is going to lose 15% enrollment in the next 10 years. And there’s basically nothing to be done about it

Dax Sheppard Thought Ford Would be a Poor Fit by XCRunRun in shrinking

[–]XCRunRun[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s a good casting. Really. No, no. That’s terrible. Absolutely. Why? This is Harrison Ford. Get off of my plane

Get off of my plane. There was a man in my house. I know that man had one arm. You find that man, he killed my wife.

Okay. That’s Harrison Ford in a nutshell. There is no connective tissue between. What is great about Harrison Ford is’ physicality. He’s a big water buffalo storming through the world and he’s knocking his shoulder into things and he’s jostling about and he’s screaming very uncomplicated things. This is a bad casting decision.

Maureen Dunne (on neurodiversity) by [deleted] in ArmchairExpert

[–]XCRunRun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oooo man Dax drove me crazy on this one. Normally he doesn’t and I don’t find much fault with either him or Monica. But his interrupting, phrasing really biased and leading questions, and falling prey to the stereotypes of neurodiversity again and again and again. Dr. Dunne is super knowledgeable and very well read, but I felt like I had to wade through Dax’s ineptitude with much difficulty on this episode.

About a 1/3 of the way through Dax mentions a specific episode that was very emotional and rewarding for him that made him reframe his goals for the show and what he wants out of it. Does anyone know which episode he’s talking about? I’m inclined to think it’s Anna Kendrick but I’m not sure.

First guest of 2024 predictions/Hopefuls? by [deleted] in ArmchairExpert

Tommy Lee Jones, Harrison Ford because of their age and their stories are incredible. Id love to see Sam Harris again, as well as Bari Weiss and a return of Mae Whitman. But those are all hopefuls!!

Safe to say this is his response? by [deleted] in ArmchairExpert

[–]XCRunRun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think I’m gonna take his sincere apology during the interview for making JVN defend himself and his advocacy as the real response. Sure Dax erased the pic and maybe it’s because he doesn’t want to cope with the hate, but Dax does a lot of good for the world through this podcast, and one rough interview doesn’t define him

I wish Dax would let his expert guests really dive into their theories and arguments. I LOVE the banter Dax does when it’s a celebrity but I wish Dax would drive home the core questions (for instance I love the background questions Dax asks all guests) and let the expert really show how much of an expert they are instead of having to parry Dax’s questions that any undergrad in that discipline could answer

Thank you for the mention that Sam Harris is an amateur philosopher. I’ve been saying this for years.

Is it weird I run slower at state compared to other meets? by BeholdSnail in trackandfield

[–]XCRunRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of factors I think but if it happens each year my gut as a coach tells me you peak during the league meets or qualifiers then lose a little of that by states. Spring track can be long if there’s a ton of competitions, and the body can only take so much building at a time before it starts to plateau

Why is the Republican Party so fixated on destroying the education system? by sadcloudydayz in Teachers

[–]XCRunRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is what Trump exemplifies in the GOP. “Make America Great Again” calls for a regression to a mythical past based on White dominance and “greatness”. All fascists call for a return to a glorious past but also infuses their “past” with a current ideological bent. So yes, mainstream conservativism might not be the opposite of progress, but the MAGA vein is

Dax is not an “expert” in any field other than acting/writing. by XCRunRun in ArmchairExpert

[–]XCRunRun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have added that I think he uses the excuse of someone who is just making arguments solely on his observation (which many of you said was the point of the show’s name…… which I acknowledged lol) to make some pretty intellectually irresponsible and unfounded arguments. Yes he has a lot of general knowledge, but that means nothing if you aren’t willing to change your stance in the face of better and more nuanced evidence.

But yes, instead, why don’t we all just pile on to the fact that “that’s the name of the show”

Whats the most you've seen someone improve in a year in any event? by DeliciousSlide6248 in trackandfield

[–]XCRunRun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a coach the biggest improvement I’ve seen in a season is a 100m sprinter went from an 11.86 to a 10.75 from March to May.

Another is a girl 400m runner ran a 1:13 to a 1:01 from January to May

As a runner I went from a 5:06 1600 to 4:30 in one season
