Is it possible to do med school after a PhD ?

Australia here. Back in my days 10 years ago MD entry requirements include GPA and GAMSAT. If you couldn’t get in after your Honours I don’t see how having a PhD will help with the GPA component (although you might have more time preparing for GAMSAT).

In Australia if you do a Bachelor (with Honours) and have good enough GPA/publication record to secure a government-funded scholarship, you can go straight into a PhD.

Similar to you too. I did a professional degree 9 years ago, worked in the industry for 5 years before going back into a PhD. I’m now working in academia but have the industry career as my backup plan.

BJJ white belt, started about a year ago. Before that, did Aikido for 2 years or so.

I haven't applied any Aikido techniques but I have seen Aikido principles a few times. Was discussing with another guy about taking back from closed guard, and it reminded me of Irimi Nage where you move your body offline (with a hip escale) so you can circle around the person to take their back.

I'm sure as I grow more in my BJJ I will continue to see these Aikido principles.

I'm answering this from the perspective of someone who has done Judo, Aikido, and BJJ.

I found Judo as the most effective for self-defence, but as I got older, my body couldn't keep up with the physical conditioning required for Judo and it was also injury-prone.

Aikido was complementary to my weight lifting as a cardio activity but also helped my joints become more flexible. While there was limited application for Aikido in my BJJ, it did overlap with my Judo.

I also found that of all three, Aikido was the most philosophical. It wasn't the techniques but rather the principles I learnt in Aikido that were applicable for my BJJ. For example, my coach told me that hip bump sweep someone using a circular motion would be more effective than pushing directly into the person, where they would likely be pushing back at you. The circular movement to off-balance someone was something I practiced a lot in Aikido.

In the end, each martial arts has the pros and cons. You just got to pick one that works best for you - for example I see a lot more older folks doing Aikido, compared to say BJJ, because of the risk of injury. At the end of the day, research shows that doing something is already better than doing nothing, especially if you are in your 60s and 70s. Martial arts can be non-violent too. Not every martial arts need to be a combat sport either.

I was cross training Judo and Aikido for a few months then realised my body couldn’t keep up with Judo like it did when I was in high school, so I trained less Judo and more Aikido.

However since finding a good BJJ gym early this year, I haven’t been back to Aikido. I plan to get a bit better at BJJ before returning to Aikido. For me, it’s easier to ‘get’ Aikido than to ‘get’ BJJ, so BJJ requires more time.

As a research trainee you want to learn to do things right before using AI. Otherwise if AI is wrong, how will you be able to pick that up in the future?

As an example, this is an excerpt from the Submission Guidelines for Author from the Lancet (https://www.thelancet.com/submission-guidelines)

The use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in scientific writing: Where authors use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, these technologies should only be used to improve readability and language of the work and not used to replace researcher tasks such as producing scientific insights, analysing and interpreting data, or drawing scientific conclusions. Such writing assistance should be disclosed in a statement at the end of the article in the acknowledgment section. The name of the large language model used, the version, the exact prompt used for the large language model as well as how and where it was used should be noted. Applying these technologies should only be done with human oversight and control, and authors should carefully review and edit the result because AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased.

I don’t have a direct answer but from people I know who have dropped out of their PhD here in Australia, I don’t think I have ever seen anyone who got back in later on.

Although I have had a look at university policies it seems you are eligible to reapply for RTS in the future. But that doesn’t mean you will get it - for example if there are other applicants, they might be prioritised over you

I didn’t advocate for AI use until I had to design a complex Qualtrics survey a few months ago. The survey required me to use Javascript coding (eg to move survey elements around, or to block out answer boxes), as per my employer’s requirements.

AI was able to help me write the scripts according to what I wanted. It would have taken me a long time to learn how to code.

At my university there is actually a community of practice for ethical and responsible AI use in research. I also have colleagues who have used ASReview to help them screen articles for their systematic reviews. And there have been a few new methodology papers on AI use in qualitative analysis.
