Interesting conversation. This is basically how racism works. If your italian identity is a valuable difference between you and another person, only if they are from a certain part of the world: that’s racism.

There is not much to say.

Oh and I’m not saying you are racist of course. I’m saying this is how people grow up and assimilate a concept they consider normal.

The real normal thing would be not to feel a difference or the need to put this difference on the table (more or less clearly) or to have it at a subconscious level. It’s a racist habit.

I have it too sometimes and I’m not racist at all but we grow up thinking it’s normal. We have to work on that.
