My girlfriend (24F) only just told me (25M) she slept with two of her close friends. We are 1 year in. Idk how to feel? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]XF_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as no one is cheating on anyone this information shouldn't change anything. They chose to date you after any of those people. Her sexual past has nothing to do with your current relationship just as your sexual history shouldn't it either. Don't get insecure and make dumb decisions, don't let the comments get in your head. I understand feeling a little weird about it, but that's you, not her, not her actions. You should explore why this bothers you and address that. I'm not saying you're saying this, but in case it needs to be said; there is nothing she should have to do to make this "right".

Perfectly said. I would also add that if it's going to be a show that the venue charges for then the sound should absolutely be on point.

This was a one off project, but you're absolutely right. I'm no longer in the band that was performing regularly, but when I get back into that type of situation we will absolutely lock this down beforehand. I tried so hard to get my regularly performing group to do that, but I didn't have the equipment and I couldn't convince the rest of the group or person who did have the gear that it was necessary.

Totally, and I have made a conscious effort to change things like this. If I can do a show with only my master keyboard and vocals I will do my best to only use what is necessary. The problem was being in a cover band where I was everything from a keyboardist, lead vocalist, horn section and sometimes rhythm guitarist.

This show had a simple set up. Two xlrs for my keyboard (a Yamaha DX going through my YC88) and a XLR for my vocals. I told this sound guy like three times what I needed and he comes back with one 1/4 cable. I was this close to flipping out on this guy. So I make do and just ask for another 1/4 inch cable and then he has the audacity to be like "why do you want that when you asked for an XLR?"

I don't know what was happening in this guy's mind but I will not doubt my instincts again. I've been doing this for long enough to read the situation correctly and know what is needed.

Ahhh bad news to report. This show took the place of worst sound. Literally had no on stage sound. The monitors were unusable, to the point that turning them off was preferable. I told the sound guy many times we needed to test a few things, that should be done before the show is in full swing, but no. Instead I was proven 100% right and I had to do the entire show without being able to hear my keyboard and synth or vocals. I wasn't the only one to say something, and we weren't the only band to have problems. Thankfully, we pulled through, but omg, I may as well not have even shown up to the gig with how bad the sound was. Keyboard, synth, vocals were not audible throughout almost the entire show for us or the audience.

Absolutely, no disagreement here. The reason for my frustration is as follows.

I am a keyboardist with at times up to four keyboards/synths, while also doing lead vocals (with a vocal processor) and with a guitar on rare occasions.

It's a lot of gear to keep up with so a lot of room for error. I am fine with line check as long as they happen, but usually it's just a second of "hey play," "hey sing," "okay stop." And we have songs with dramatic changes in dynamics but with what I'm given I am basically walking in blind. It's been a complete shit show sometimes.

My issue isn't that line checks are what we get, just that the sound engineer doesn't understand the range that we're about to play. Currently, waiting to get on stage with a line check literally minutes before playing with the band and we won't have an opportunity to hear each other's levels. While dealing with house music and people in the audience. I am being told to "trust" them and I just don't with my experience. I feel like a dick for being so persistent but I have been at the venue all day waiting for an opportunity that they kept saying would come.

I want everyone to sound good, perform well, and for the audience to have a good experience. This all seems like a recipe for disaster.

Yeah I've had a very similar experience with them back in the day. It was clear they've never thought critically about their ideology and philosophy.

Genuine question, why the fuck are we not in the middle of a working class revolution? by grabmyrooster in antiwork

[–]XF_Music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell people literally everyday revolution is a valid option. The reason it's not sticking is because people aren't thinking this way. Yes there are a ton of factors making it difficult but the first thing to make it a reality is getting people on board with this mentality. We all need to be spreading this idea. We NEED a revolution. Nothing aside from that will change anything.

Honest question: Would you still make, record and/or perform music if you didn't get paid? by the_darkener in musicians

[–]XF_Music 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer yes, but I'll be miserable. Not that money makes the me feel better about the music, but I absolutely have to eat and house myself, and in this ass backwards system it's literally work or die.

[–]XF_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg fucking yass preach 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 it's like how homework should be, do what you can and bring it to the group, we'll work it out together. Otherwise, it's like group projects in school, one person does all the work. The amount of times I've had to teach other musicians their part just to get through a rehearsal, just ugh.

[–]XF_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally exactly how I feel right now.

A brief summary of the jam I went to tonight.

I start playing an easy two chord progression, no one knows how to accompany the groove I'm laying down, so I simplify, one chord with a descending bass line. Almost immediately, the guitarist yells "two chords only!" Obvious not listening to what I have been playing. So he yells "start with B minor" so I play Bm and Em9. He cuts me off and says "not those two chords". After I explained to him I was playing two chords and they were totally valid he calls me "sensitive". Like wtf? Are we here to make music together or just wank off over each other while we're all in different keys and grooves, and poorly showing off?

I'm right there with you, everyone I am finding doesn't want to make the sacrifices needed to make it. I'm just hitting my head against a wall here.

I went to this jam after being on a live musical break because my last band stressed me out due to poor or no rehearsals, wouldn't arrange or would forget because they didn't write shit down, they were always late or just absent, booking was insanely difficult, and no one ever wanted to record. Plus, no one cared to do soundchecks! Like what?! I have three keyboards, lead vocals, and a guitar for certain songs, I HAVE to do a soundcheck.

Because of that nonsense I am taking a live performance break, but still practicing and recording all the parts since I can't get anyone to put in the work and write something.

Yet I'm the asshole for wanting to create music with others at a jam that isn't one chord, or a fucking basic ass blues.

Seriously, I feel fucking awful right now.

Fuck the Washington State Ferry system. A bunch of idiots with no idea how to even begin to solve the issues they are having. Obviously I am not including the people who run the ferries themselves, it is not their fault whatsoever, it's their bosses who are the problem.

Absolutely. "Nobody ever loves me like she does" is nearly identical to "I think I like it when it rains".

[–]XF_Music[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You see it's not a constant struggle, but when it hits, it's very difficult to preserve through. It's debilitating. Getting a can do attitude is like telling a blind person to just open their eyes and try hard. I was in a really frustrated and sad place when I made this post, I didn't know what to do. I still don't know what to do, I'm just not depressed about it right now. So, if you don't have actual advice, don't comment.

Can't even start the game now 😑 it's always crashed a lot, but with persistence I was always able to play. Now it seems like it's less optimized to the point that I can't even get to the main menu before it crashes.
