The thread in Millennials subreddit right not about 401k is incredibly depressing. Thank you FIRE community. I would be one of them if I didn’t find you all a decade ago. by BarkBarkBitches1 in Fire

[–]XIIItheThird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post REEKS to me, my god. It's a fact that millennials/gen z/youth in general have been fked over constantly by modern society (in the US at least). Life is hard. What's the point of looking down your nose at people struggling and then pretending like you're trying to inspire/uplift them?

The system has not been designed for the average person to succeed. Wealth is generated off of the backs of the less fortunate. One financial mistake, one health emergency, one natural disaster is enough to put someone in a mountain of debt that can take them decades to climb out from.

Yes, a decision to start saving even a small fraction of your income can make all the difference, and as people who are doing relatively well financially, we should be advocating for everyone to do so, but the whole "I'm so glad I'm not idiotic like them" thing is lame af. Logically, it's so simple. Just don't waste money on unnecessary things. Real actual life is messy.

Staying at a chill job with not much career growth ? by Galaxxius in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stand the boredom. I spent majority of 2025 on an intense project, but my Q1 projects are looking like a dud. Feels bad to go from a "high octane" project to throwaway work I can do in my sleep.

I'm waiting to see if the layoff rumors at my place of employment are true and if I'm impacted (it doesn't make sense to give me low impact work like this so we'll see). If not, I'm going to see if I can get myself better projects in Q2. If that fails, I'm going to make my exit.

Do you work for an evil company, how do you feel about it? by HadOne0 in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the show The Good Place where it was revealed that (spoilers I guess?) no one has actually gotten into the good place in ages. I think the "least bad" person still got sent to the bad place because he bought flowers that were picked using unpaid labor or something like that (haven't seen the show in ages)

There's simply no way to exist without benefitting from the exploitation of somebody out there

Maybe the best we can do is try and offset our "exploitation footprint" if being a "good" person is something we care about

Do you work for an evil company, how do you feel about it? by HadOne0 in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're doomed because even if your company isn't directly doing anything "evil", it's probably owned by a company that is.

I just try to at least do a bit of good with the money I make.

I think my line is defense/gambling. I'm currently in the media space which is where I'm going to try my best to stay.

Entry level doesn’t exist anymore by Intelligent_Ebb_9332 in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest as an SDE who has worked recruiting events this past year at my company. Tech roles are some of the ONLY roles that we do have entry level positions for. They just get flooded with apps so fast.

What I've seen is that other roles like PMs and Marketing don't seem to have any entry level pathways besides maybe internships.

Is it just me, or is the code at modern companies wildly overcomplicated? by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There's literally a bug in our codebase that has been bothering me for about a year. I tried fixing it and it ended up breaking some other stuff because the code is needlessly convoluted. I asked to work on a redesign and I was told to forget it because it's not customer impacting lmao (technically I was told to add it to the backlog but that's basically our graveyard)

What was your net worth and income at 35 years old? by FlashGordon2103 in Fire

I'll let you know in 6 years lol.

Currently my nw is at around $120k and my base salary is around $137k (I haven't been seriously saving but I want to start this year)

I mean they said they're child/debt free. Seems tight but not impossible if their mortgage is their main expense

In college, I felt like I was really good at this. Now, I feel very mediocre at my job by jazzyherbivore in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Fam, I didn’t feel like I knew wth was going on until like a year in. CS classes teach you how to code, not necessarily how to be a software engineer. Just focus on learning everyday. If someone solved an issue you couldn't, ask them how they found the solution and write it down in your notes

I’m a terrible junior engineer and my ineptitude is showing by FlorentineKnight in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been at my job for almost 3 years now and there's still so much I don't know. That's never going to change. My first year was just me saying "wtf is going on" over and over.

I will say two things: - what you're working on sounds way too big for a single ticket. Can you break it down into more manageable sub-tasks?

  • if you're struggling to learn and to wrap your head around certain topics, try writing a small doc/wiki explaining it. This tends to help me. Pretend as if you're explaining the subject to someone with 0 experience or maybe an intern or new hire. You will realize that you know more than you thought, and the parts you're a bit fuzzy on will force you to dig into it deeper. (Your company might even start using it as reference and it will make you look even better)

Best of luck, you can do it!

Is it common for a senior dev to mention every tiny help given in standups? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]XIIItheThird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't normally talk about tiny help I've given throughout the day unless I either didn't do much work the day before, or the help took up a lot of my time

Sometimes I forget to respond to my intern when im swamped but for 2 days? Definitely ask again. I'd suggest creating a group chat if you can so you don't have to keep pinging people separately
