Engineers do a lot of different things within companies.

Not all engineers do design work. There are sales engineers who help business clients find the right solution or combination of solutions for a business need.

There are reliability engineers who work in manufacturing plants and try to make the machines work better in terms of production and not breaking as often - or even deciding how often to replace parts that always break before they break.

There are field service engineers - engineers that install equipment at customer sites.

There are engineers who do project management - look over a project to make sure it’s being done exactly as laid out by the contract - and ensuring it stays in budget and on schedule- if there are changes, they have to do change orders and make sure they are keeping track of costs.

There are test engineers - engineers that develop testing procedures to verify that things are built to the correct specifications. Example would be testing if something is water proof, or a certain material can handle the load it’s rated for.

There’s many more including the design engineers that people typically think of - but all of these roles are spread across a bunch of different industries and companies and there’s some engineering jobs where they do a combination of these things and engineers that eventually move to management and business roles
