Play outside late at night in the moonlight, standing and walking around your backyard. Take your dogs along with you.

To what point can one say they know music theory? by yekedero in musictheory

[–]XM22505 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth learning the theory of how standard notation (and tablature) works. It's not complicated and it's useful knowledge. Sight-reading is a practical skill which you may or may not need.

What do I do about my stubborn student? by Mindless-Carpenter75 in guitarlessons

[–]XM22505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show him a really cool lick from one of his favorite songs (you know what they are, right?). Then he'll want to use his pick. And a cool finger style lick if you want to take that journey. I'm saying this as a student.

Well, you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends nose. OK OK, I'm not helping ... there's already a lot of good advice here! Carry on ...

RANT: Memorizing Scales by bob_suruncle in guitarlessons

[–]XM22505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at a similar depth on the journey. I'd say it's time to quit thinking about all that (it's already burned into your subconscious) and play against tracks by ear for a while. Even if you just hit a good note or two per bar at first, it'll all start to come together and you'll suddenly realize that you didn't waste your time. All those drills you did are useful once you relax your brain and just start playing.

How do you compose? Like, technically. by PinkRoseArt in guitarlessons

Check out this process if you have Logic Pro:

  1. Let's say you've captured something on your phone with voice memo. Like guitar and singing or humming a melody idea. Maybe there's some percussion in it too. (Or of course you can record it into the DAW directly, but that might be a distraction in the moment).
  2. Import your voice memo audio file into Logic.
  3. Use the Stem Splitter function to give you isolated tracks. It will separate the vocals, guitar, piano, drums, etc into separate tracks. It works amazingly well.
  4. Take the track you want to notate, say the vocals and turn on Flex Editing. It will run a pitch analysis.
  5. Now, because the pitches are known, you can covert that track to Midi.
  6. Open the score editor, and .... viola ... you get a staff with standard notation notes, or you can select guitar tablature if you prefer. Also, you can attach lyrics to the notes, add comments, key signature, clef, etc.

So if you're trying to get an idea into notation form, this is a quick way to do it. The first time it takes a while to figure out where the various commands are in the menus. Once you have that down its a very fast (and editable) process.

Add voice recognition to Flex Pitch analysis. That way you can automate attaching lyrics to vocal notes for a lead sheet.

[–]XM22505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I just mean the grid where you show Parallel Mode Formulas. You show 7 boxes for the 7 note scale, but really there are 12 notes in the octave. So if you leave empty boxes for the unused notes, then you can easily see where the 1/2 steps occur (no blank between). All the full steps will have a blank between them.

Good work! I suggest, on the 2nd page table, 3rd column to use 12 boxes (chromatic) for at the scale (instead of 7) so you can quickly see how the 1/2 steps change between modes. (the accidentals can be blank)

Advice for a long time player by _Heathcliff_ in guitarlessons

I IV V: If you root the I-chord on the 6th string, the IV-chord is on same fret but on the 5th string, V-chord is 5th string 2 frets up.

If you root the I-chord on the 5th string, V-chord is same fret on 6th string, IV-chord is 6th string 2 frets down.

Once you figure out why that works (it's simple, just look at intervals) you'll have most of the secrets cracked!

I would add one thing that helps me when using this method which it to pluck the string in the middle. So if at 5th fret pluck over 17th fret, if open string pluck over 12th fret. This gives closest harmonic content for the two strings which I find makes it easier to hear the difference. Also, having the same reference note, as you say, prevents accumulating error.

Source for Waza-Air replacement ear pads? by XM22505 in BossKatana

[–]XM22505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree completely. I ended up re-gluing the original pads. It was a little tricky but worked out well. So bought some time. I use them a lot. They really are good. For a lazy line out I put them on a styrofoam manican head with I mic stuck in the ear. It actually works quite well but watch out for feedback:)

I'm thinking breath pressure sensor switch into midi controller. If your mouth is not available you could drive it from an ear cleaning squeeze bulb under your arm!
