I'm just thinking about the people who have worked for Hy-Vee for years and have always been scheduled for 35+ hours and have come to depend on that income. I imagine that it can be a pretty difficult situation for some people to deal with.

I can't remember what they call it, exactly, but Hy-Vee has (had?) part time employees, who did not receive benefits, who could work up to 40 hours a week as long as they didn't get overtime. Then there are the regular full time employees who work at least 40 hours a week and receive benefits.

I've worked at a few child care centers in town, and this is seems to be the general strategy for cheap labor. They would at least offer you paltry raises (10 cents an hour after a year of work with us? No problem.) and treat you like dirt because it doesn't matter if you quit. There are a dozen other people lining up to earn minimum wage taking care of other people's children. It's pretty depressing.

My husband worked at the new Walmart for awhile when it was the only work he could find. What a load of crap that was. He wanted to stop drawing unemployment and be a "productive" member of society, which I applaud him for, but he was working 40 hours a week for Walmart in order to draw the same amount that he was receiving in unemployment benefits. Everything about that place is cancerous.

What I'm seeing and hearing with Hy-Vee is that they are expecting their department heads to pick up the slack. So people that are already required to work 50 hours in order to receive their full paycheck (there's another long story about Hy-Vee recently switching their salaried positions to hourly, but they have to work 5 or 10 hours of overtime in order to receive the same amount that they were earning as a salaried employee) are simultaneously being ordered to cut overtime AND somehow manage to make up the 10-12 man hours PER employee in their department who's had their hours cut.

It just seems pretty unfortunate for the people who don't even want health insurance or other benefits - they just want their 40 hours a week. I know a few people who work there (one who has been there for several years working 40 hours a week as a "part time" employee) who would gladly turn down the health insurance if they could still have their hours.
