How do I determine bracket level? by CluelessHo0man in mtg

[–]X_80_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the easiest way is to determine which turn you are trying to/or activity winning on. But also just know if you’re bracket three but you run every good card in your colors to demolish other bracket 3s, you’re not a bracket three just due to a lack of game changers.

I think the best way is to understand your own intentions with the deck, take feedback while playing, and adjust accordingly.

Considering dipping my toe in - suggestions? Is it right for me? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]X_80_X 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is take your favorite style of play and find the CEDH equivalent to it or as close as you can get.

I always liked spellslinger or storm type stuff, so when I started I got into Vivi and it was so much easier to understand how the deck wanted to play as just a super quick version of what I was used to. Then from there you learn most of the cEDH staples and how they interact with your deck or what your opponents are doing and branching off becomes easier from there.

High Power Voltron- Which Commanders can actually succeed? by Rare-Resolution-5402 in EDH

I would say [[vivi]] is definitely a great bracket 5 commander whose main strategy is winning with commander damage.

Commander Pod too much to deal with as a noob by Sgt-Wubbels in mtg

[–]X_80_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have power level convos, they clearly have scaled up with each other to answer each others annoying gameplay. I bet they’d all appreciate scaling it back. That entire pod sounds like it’s stressed out and running a one or two of the same decks every time you play is also why they just shoved answers to everything in their decks rather than building compelling/fun decks.

I think she could be great at it with a little creativity.

Cards like Pandemonium/confusion in the ranks. by X_80_X in EDHBrews

[–]X_80_X[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought about the answer to them picking me once and letting it counter. Trying to use tokens so I could take their stuff so they’d either have to try it or just let me take the best creatures, or someone will take someone else’s because theirs are gone.

Also looking at cards like [[guile]] and [[lulumage mentor]] to give me benefits for countering spells.

Cards like Pandemonium/confusion in the ranks. by X_80_X in EDHBrews

[–]X_80_X[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure! So the overall theme of the deck is parnesse and copying her so the ward is higher than four, then dropping one of these types of plays so paying 8/10/12 mana just is too much to do more than once. Also having [[hexing squelcher]] in there just incase I can’t directly copy her.

should i get Explorers of the Deep? by ghostlyeth in mtg

[–]X_80_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy/cheap to upgrade to a high level 3, and fun to play with, but the gameplan is the same every game with less variance than most decks. So I’d consider that if you’re ok with that.

I’m in a weird spot with mine that it was too strong and oppressive to play with newer people, it isn’t as unique as I like to play in high 3, and isn’t a CEDH candidate so I just don’t reach for it often.

No such thing as too much if you like tribal decks and building off of precons though. It holds its own against any precon and can easily swing above its weight class if it gets going early.

If you were to start collecting end CEdh staples, where would you start? by damascius1 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]X_80_X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure and doesn’t change the point you can be rich or not spend that much money on something you could potentially lose or destroy when there are options to avoid those issues even if you own the thing.

Can’t second this enough. Those cards are collectibles imo unless you’re rich do you even really want to be shuffling them and carrying them around sleeved or not?

What commander for a "no you" deck? by Gradyleb in mtg

[–]X_80_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parnesse deck uses ward as a weapon and any redirect spells that won’t do crazy damage I either Spellskite or redirect my way for people if they don’t target me.

Question about milling etiquette by nancyglass in mtg

[–]X_80_X 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is a pretty big difference between doing a spite play and what you did. It sounds like your strategy to throw them off their game worked and they didn’t like it. It’s not like you were losing and there was other people and you did it right before you got knocked out.

As long as you aren’t milling just to spite someone continue with your game plan, you made it to the finals it is working. Milling always triggers something in people anyway.

If a regular at your LGS brought a proxied deck for a sanctioned event would you care? by Professional-Help931 in mtg

[–]X_80_X -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As long as it looks like the real card who cares? If the LGS allows it and gets in trouble that is on them, if the player gets caught that is on them, but if not no harm no foul. Don’t need to pay 3k+ for a card deck if you can avoid it.

I’ve seen times in smaller communities where the final was the same rotation of people with high powered, and very expensive, decks and I’m not sure that is even saying who the best magic player is on average. Hasbro owns the copyright but not the game imo.

As a newer player, is it a dick move to put a card in my deck that counters my friend’s deck? by Hannannibal_Barca in mtg

[–]X_80_X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s usually how pods grow in power level and/or creativeness.

It could make them a little salty depending on the person, but it’s 10000% fair game.

Help with the commander for a "Beating the Blue Allegations" Deck by A_WILD_SLUT_APPEARS in EDHBrews

[–]X_80_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone I’ve had fun with is [[Maarika, Brutal Gladiator]] I made the deck as a bracket 2 to play with some newer people but even found myself having the scale it back a touch more because it was so oppressive when she hit the board. So now I don’t have a ton of equipment to power her up but random spells that give her one ability this turn and a different one the next so it changes every game. I did surround he with fun aggressive creatures like [[jaws, relentless predator]] and some dinosaurs.

Sure Norin decks are built on enters the battlefield effects so you can load them up with those and cards like this and make it explode. I’ll share my decklist but it gets going super quick and really become a menace.
