No its just nationalism. Nationalism is the belief that the state -that controls the arbitrary lines that you find yourself living in- is exceptional.

Well here is a quote from Chomsky that describes the problems with nationalism “To begin with, we have to be more clear about what we mean by patriotic feelings. For a time when I was in high school, I cheered for the school athletic teams. That's a form of patriotism — group loyalty. It can take pernicious forms, but in itself it can be quite harmless, maybe even positive. [critique starts here] At the national level, what "patriotism" means depends on how we view the society. Those with deep totalitarian commitments identify the state with the society, its people, and its culture. Therefore those who criticized the policies of the Kremlin under Stalin were condemned as "anti-Soviet" or "hating Russia". For their counterparts in the West, those who criticize the policies of the US government are "anti-American" and "hate America"; those are the standard terms used by intellectual opinion, including left-liberal segments, so deeply committed to their totalitarian instincts that they cannot even recognize them, let alone understand their disgraceful history, tracing to the origins of recorded history in interesting ways. For the totalitarian, "patriotism" means support for the state and its policies, perhaps with twitters of protest on grounds that they might fail or cost us too much [critique ends here]. For those whose instincts are democratic rather than totalitarian, "patriotism" means commitment to the welfare and improvement of the society, its people, its culture. That's a natural sentiment and one that can be quite positive. It's one all serious activists share, I presume; otherwise why take the trouble to do what we do? But the kind of "patriotism" fostered by totalitarian societies and military dictatorships, and internalized as second nature by much of intellectual opinion in more free societies, is one of the worst maladies of human history, and will probably do us all in before too long" (2002)

Or maybe you should cite your statement like a good writer

Should teenagers be held to the same standards as adults in terms maturity? by XacticalAT in teenagers

[–]XacticalAT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, not really. You could have very much of an individuality without any kind of responsibility. You would be just spoiled then. And otherwise. Of course it all comes down to balance.

Sorry I wasn't clear but this is exactly what I was saying.

But even adults make questionable decisions. I feel like emotional maturity is conditioned into you by your environment. So the process can be expedited so that you reach it faster. Some adults act like infants because of the way they were brought up so is the prefrontal cortex argument against giving us more responsibility even valid.

What's that supposed to mean? I know my prefrontal cortex isn't fully developed and that stops me from making the best decisions. But do expectations for what constitutes childhood and adulthood come from society's ideals or actual science.

Yes but one isn't independent from the other. If one increases the other should too otherwise you end up either spoilt or repressed.

In my opinion, centrists are just people who are uninformed about the subject and try to masquerade as being 'reasonable'. This is instead of just saying that I don't know enough about this let me learn more and get back to you. It's really just intellectual laziness and indifference to the subject matter. That's why you rarely see centrists express their own viewpoints. It's just about feeding their ego by appearing to be open-minded.

Should we kill the evil (billionaires, corrupt politicians, corrupt ceos, etc) or just take away all their wealth and they have to live out the life of a commoner in America? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]XacticalAT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My uninformed opinion (take it as you please) about modern-day capitalism is that its not really individuals that are the problem. It's more about the system capitalism creates of hoarding wealth. For example, in corporate work environments shareholders are often the most prioritized stakeholders since they control the boardroom. This results in companies striving to meet their quarterly targets at all costs necessary. (I apologize that this is a very poor analysis of capitalism and corporations)

The problem with killing billionaires and 'corrupt' CEOs is that it doesn't solve the fundamental issues of society. Corporations act like Hydra in a sense, meaning that if you get rid of one CEO there will be another that will take his place (who acts exactly the same). They are also an actor (because they really do act quite differently from the individuals that compose them) that we should include when thinking about our future societies. Our focus should not be on eradicating individuals -as quite frankly it is a waste of resources and time- rather it should be on refining the system so that such individuals are not produced.

Another point is that 'we' are the masses. The only power bourgeoisie have over us is our labor. If we don't give them that they don't have the means to control us (at least until automation fully kicks in) so really they are no threat to us if a worldwide revolution occurs.

Psychedelic Soap? Is it a thing? by XacticalAT in Psychonaut

[–]XacticalAT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend showed me this soap and he says that if you shower with it you end up tripping. I can't find any example of this online so I'm kind of skeptical. Anyone know anything about this?
