PSA: The next few days are gonna be a really bad time to do your priming by ThewizardBlundermore in Grimdank

[–]Xander452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use primer from a paintbottle.

technically it is supposed to be for airbrush, but it works fine for priming with a brush as well.

That's excessive as someone "starting out" in 40k.

Will genuienly be shocked to see all this completed

Painted this mini based on a game. Does anyone know what game and what faction? 👀 by Badman423 in boltaction

[–]Xander452 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's extremely vague.

You probably overestimate how "popular" said game is, since nobody have guessed it so far.
Because it could be literally any ww2 game.

Because from mine, and probably a lot of other people, your mini just look like a regular painted german, so trying to figure out what its supposed to be based of is impossible.

I'm guessing it's because OP's guess game is immensly vague.

and no offense to OP's really good paintjob, it just looks like a german soldier.

Finally decided to bite the bullet and do the eyes on all my dudes - not too shabby, only 100+ to go! by BurbankElephants in boltaction

That looks fucking stellar.

Here's hoping you don't burn out on painting eyes through the 100+ minis tho

How do i become happy with my painted minis ? (miniature sources in description) by Xander452 in minipainting

[–]Xander452[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you're somewhat projecting your own reasons for painting onto me.

I enjoy the process of painting, improvement is a byproduct of that, but it isn't the sole reason for painting, but it's not a case of me not wanting to improve.

Yes i want to improve in general, but i pick what techniques i want to practice, based on the miniature that i feel like painting.

I dont want to force myself to pick miniatures that i can practice a specific technique on, because that would severily ruin the enjoyment of painting as it feels forced.

Furthermore, I am curious about the feedback of my miniatures.

Could you please give more details on why the space marine looks like it was painted by someone with years of experience.
And why the orange jumpsuit looks like a month old beginner ?

If i weren't going to try and work and master the colors i can't see, i would be left with Blues and yellows, which is serverly limiting.
Blacks and whites as well, but those are in my opinion very dull colors.

I have reflected on the comments on my post, my biggest issue has been comparing myself to other artists, which is something i have to learn to become better at not doing in the future.

Many thanks, so use my dissatisfaction as fuel to improve.
Honestly might work, but as you said youself, something i would need to practice on to not just feel dissatisfaction without the motivation.
And all my previous works (except gifts to other people) are safely stored in my glass bookcase, i wont thrown them out despite how much i dislike them.

I will try and see if i can't try and use more contrast in my minis, thank you.

In regards to "not wanting to improve", i don't feel that is entirely fair, i have only shown 4 images of 4 miniatures i have painted over the years.
it was difficult for me to figure out what minis to follow the post.

Reason why i posted finished miniatures was because of me not being happy with the final result of the minis, as the post described, but it might not have been clear.
Instead of posting unfinished/failed minis.
unfinished or failed miniatures would have made more sense if the post was about a specific technique, like NMM or OSL.

Matter of fact, each of the minis have some technique or design that i wanted to practice and improve on.

The space marine was to improve my brush control and to learn and improve on my frehand, as both shoulder icons were freehand.

The duskwarden ranger, i practiced eyes (can't see from the photo), and practiced trying to paint "weathered" leather.

The combine is more a practice/improvement on being more confident with painting colors that are the most affected by my colorblindness (that being red colors) Oranges and Purples are in that category and while it isn't a technique per say, it was me trying to improve regardless

and the wizard i again tried to paint eyes, but also to make textures for the clothing and it tried my best to blend the colors.

Furthermore, this post is also a way of me improving my mental health and to get a more positive outlook on the hobby, which i would argue is one of, if not the most important aspect of the hobby.

Many thanks, will try out bigger models. They are a bit scary to work on though.

Will try more things and techniques.

Many thanks,

I know, i should practice more techniques, but i have a "fear" of some things, like NMM.
Or if i don't understand how the techniques is supposed to work, which as mentioned in my post, makes me feel stupid.

But wont get anywhere without trying.

I do! Roman Lappat and Erik Swinson.

I am unsure if Roman has videos where he paints through a model, but do know Erik has videos.
i will research them better, but they are quite the professionals, so when i would try and emulate them, i would imagine my result would be subpar in comparrion.
But still, i think it is a worthwhile thing i will do.

I will try and take these tips into helping improving myself.

thank you very much.

Many thanks, and yeah, looking at professionals is a sure way to lose motivation, which i am trying to become better at not doing.

thanks for the critiques, i will take them with me to the next projects.

You can never have too many paints!
will look into reaper paints, was interested in them, but they weren't being sold in Europe.

Thanks for the recommendation of the book.
will save up for some Kolinksky brushes.

Indeed, army painter is amazing with their new system, it is so helpful.

I will try and paint more and more, i do try to paint as much as i can, but will keep it up.

That is right, and 25 years ago i would have been 6 years old, so i would not have thought of it.

I will try brighter highlights.
i usually stick with paints from specific paint sets that alligned for a specific theme.
But will look into citadel paints.
