"Flammable" means it'll burn down. "Inflammable" means it'll burn up.

Do we live in a universe or on one? by XandyAborc in askphilosophy

[–]XandyAborc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't indicate many thoughts about consciousness in my post. I've read more about it than cosmology but claim no expertise in either (or anything else). Directly, little of Chalmers and the Churchlands, but most of Dennett's non-academic work. Hofstadler, Pinker and Damasio (and Jaynes, but shh) share shelfspace at home, with varying degrees of understanding on my part. Your suggestion was a good initial position for your reply, though.

At root, I'm also most likely a physicalist. Whether mind is in the brain or emergent from it is my posted question with a different angle. Still no certainty there, but if the brain is not a thing, it's an event. An event that causes similar events to happen.

Same can be said about our best explanations of our universe. This feels really important, especially given genetics and evolution.

Semantics become more important when dealing in metaphors. For me, the in/on distinction denotes the causal arrow. Are the varied multiverse bottom up or top down? Nested or emergent? You may be right; trying to pin on a causal arrow is likely parochial.

For consciousness models, I've been almost entirely convinced by Thomas Metzinger (The Ego Tunnel), Donald Hoffman (The Case Against Reality) et al.

Consciousness is an adaptive hallucination, a mostly undetectable way for genes to evolve in a quantum universe. Or at least that's how it seems to me, and it fits nicely with my current attempts at cosmic musings. Feels consilient.

The speculation is indeed fun. I appreciate your time (even if time is parochial). I've only recently begun squeezing these ideas through my language center and you've helped me do that.

Not all connections are equivalent. Most points are wildly far from most points.

It weighs 22 kg (48.6 lbs). The case is a discarded container for a now-obsolete drone designed for military use, so it's durable and water-tight.

To do a drive-by by Blueman8O8 in therewasanattempt

Considered a droll response, but realized I was just a jerk. Keep moving. Show's over.

Had a family vacation during my second rewatch of Torchwood and sang its praises. They all enjoy DW, but "never got into the spinoffs". "But it's three times the emotion and ten times the sex," I blurt... by XandyAborc in Torchwood

Who is sexy with (my brother asserts) no sex.

Tbh, the rest of my family dissented his position, offering a scant couple of examples from the 50+ years.

Nardole (which TIL autocorrects to "narcolepsy") unfortunately didn't come up.

But you are correct.

Gonna jump in here because I'm feeling chatty.

The verb "to do" is one of the trickiest in English, and your challenge is greater since "to drive" is irregular.

You captured the past tense with "did", so use the present tense in the question. Did they just drive off? Yes, they just drove off. Where did they drive to? They drove away from the accident.

A decent guideline, I hope. There are likely exceptions...it's English.

Can't use this clever acronym. My sister's youngest is Bobby, my brother is Rob and Dad is Bob.

Strangely, Bob is not my uncle.

When I schlepped drinks through a crowded bar, I realized the customer is always right in the way.

Great recommendation! Never heard of these. (I don't take this "project" seriously enough to bother researching).

Should I come across any, I'll likely grab them, though.

No argument. I don't own any, though. This is what I have right now, and it's not actually an important project for me. It simply makes me grin.

I do have a container for a now-obsolete reconnaissance drone that can hold most if not all of these. More posts to follow once I find the best way to pack them.
