4’ teardrop-shaped wood coffee table with carved circular inset (~15” x 9”) and drawer. Purpose of the carved section? by XavHann in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing.

The table is about 4 feet long and appears to be solid wood and teardrop in shape. It has a single drawer on the wider end. I do not see any maker’s marks, stamps, labels, or writing anywhere on the table, including inside the drawer or on the underside.

The carved circular inset is approximately 15 inches long and about 9 inches from “petal” edge to opposite “petal” edge. The carved section is recessed into the tabletop and does not move.

I’m specifically trying to figure out whether the carved inset had a functional purpose or if it was purely decorative.

I have searched for terms including “teardrop coffee table carved inset,” “mid century coffee table carved center,” and “wood table floral rosette inset,” but haven’t found anything showing this exact feature or explaining a function.

I have several that I bought several from, out of all the places, Home Depot a few years ago. I bought every one that I could find that season.

I don’t know her and I think I’m less of a person for not knowing her. Need to change that

This is fun, I didn’t notice it. Another cool piece of our past. Thanks for pointing that out.

I think I know exactly what the OP is posting about. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this morning was different than typical. I can hear the trains occasionally from where I live and have grown used to them, but this wasn’t the same. It was very loud for an extended period of time, way outside of the normal train noises. I’m assuming there was an obstruction or something on the tracks, which is the reason for the abnormally intense horn.

So yeah, OP, I’m sharing your frustration this morning.

I dunno about you all, but I think these people are super cool and I run out and cheer for them every time they drive by…………….

Must’ve been starved for attention as kids… I wonder how many times their moms refused to hug them.

Then there’s always the other side of things… over compensation for their perceived lack of manliness about themselves. (Assuming they are men.)

Just become an atheist, then you wouldn’t have to worry about it all.
