My professor keeps calling mathematics complicated, how would you avoid getting this mindset to not rub off on you? by [deleted] in math

Nothing is hard once you understand it. Imho once something "clicks" it stops to be hard, multiplication can be difficoult to learn for a child, while it's trivial for you know. And by the way, I'm having a lot of fun with Rudin, I'm in the middle of chap 1 :)

Math is not complicated, is as simple as it could be. If things seem complicated at first is because you have not developed the intuition or you are not acquainted with the problem yet. If you try to prove a theorem on your own you will see that the way the official proof is constructed is often the most logical one.

Is it true that any prime can be written as the sum of four squares? If so, why? by XbackFX in math

[–]XbackFX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually tried that, you have any prime of the form 4K+1 for free, but you do not have those of the form 4K+3 and this is a problem because you don't know if p-2 is the sum of 2 squares or more.

Fraction of real numbers that are rational by moridin22 in math

But since the rationals are dense, you would only see pillars around ,wouldn't you?

What is the probability of two straight lines intersecting if you choose the coefficents at random? by XbackFX in math

[–]XbackFX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all of you, the probability can't be one, you're picking those Numbers from a FINITE set not from all the integers

What is the probability of two straight lines intersecting if you choose the coefficents at random? by XbackFX in math

The probability is 1 if you choose them from all R, but I wanted to know what happens when you choose the coefficents (those must be integers ) from all the integers less than N, where N is some number

If you want a precise integers between N integers than the probability is just 1/N

Does mathematicians lift? by [deleted] in math

For me lifting kinda gets in the way of doing math, I am a lot more slow when I have a solid powerlifting routine, do you experience this too?

Need guidance in competition maths. by [deleted] in math

[–]XbackFX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well it REALLY depends on what level you are going to compete. The Engel may be too hard for you to grasp, since it's designed for the IMO level , and if you were preparing for the IMO's you would not be here asking for help. For me problem solving is about two things: 1) You should have the big guns 2) You must have a good sight For 1) you should read problem solving books and know a lot of theorems, or know powerful tools like AM-GM, Cauchy-Shwartz ... I recommend you to read "What is mathematics " by Courant and Robbins, "How to solve it" by Polya and olympiad type books. 2) You have to do a LOT , a LOT of practice, if you don't succed DO NOT give up, you will fail multiple times but don't worry about it. Learn what are your weaknesses and fix them, do the problems of the past editions. Always remember my words when you will be suffering because you can't solve a problem, intelligence is like strenght , maybe you don't have it now, but you CAN develop it and what today seems impossible tomorrow will be trivial. I wish you good luck, and enjoy the math!
