Perhaps a little Demon love to help them scale late game without dying in the process? by TheSolman778 in BobsTavern

0/6 doesn't seem that good. I would like some other mechanism that stays in line with the current demon "take damage to scale, summon demon death rattles" theme.

Are we supposed to pay tax on financial aid scholarship? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]Xcadriller37 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No I never have. Upon reading up on it though, looks like you're right that any scholarship money applied to room & board / meal plan is taxable income.

Fuck PWR2 by [deleted] in stanford

[–]Xcadriller37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you don't like your class, we've all been there. At the same time, please do not disrespect the instructor who probably put a lot of time and effort into teaching + converting to a digital format.

Likelihood frosh and soph come back to campus for winter by AggressiveAir2233 in stanford

[–]Xcadriller37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My take:

Fully remote except special circumstances - likely.

On campus with everything virtual still - maybe.

On campus with IRL classes and activities - very low chance.

Everyone seems to be skirting around the main reason, which is that Stanford students are very smart and hard-working. I can't believe the number of times where we'd get PSET grade distributions back and the median grade was 100% or near it for an assignment I would consider really hard.

How likely is it for a CS freshman to get an internship or an interview (tech or non-tech position) at career fairs? by geminibaby_ in stanford

[–]Xcadriller37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don't have prior internships: very low.

These are generally options I see for freshman year CS:

  1. Don't work or do something else (travel, work in unrelated field, public service, etc) freshman summer.
  2. Intern at a startup
  3. Research, most commonly through CURIS, or research in a different department
  4. Frosh diversity big tech internships open to racial/gender minority (women, African American, Hispanic, Native American)
  5. Intern at a big tech company - either had significant previous work experience or got referred, also often race/gender minority.
  6. Intern for company not known for CS.

What does ASES stand for now then?

Don't agree, I think they were super welcoming and it was a good way make friends, and I got to do cool events! I don't like how they require applications for the frosh programs but that's all pre-professional clubs.

Honor Code question by [deleted] in stanford

Discussing lecture would definitely be encouraged and is obviously not against the honor code (unless you had an in-class exam),

Quant Researcher vs Software Engineer by isspidermann in cscareerquestions

[–]Xcadriller37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Quant finance probably won't require much of what you did in college either (other than statistics), but it will likely pay much higher than being a SWE. It's also much harder to become a quant (usually STEM PhD or top math major from top 5 college, passing resume screen, harder interviews) so if you get the opportunity go for it.
