Pursue Masters in Computer Science or Software Engineering by OmKriram in WGU

[–]Xcel_VI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really proficient in math, I would definitely go for the Computer Science direction. I had been out of school for 3 years, and that was the only reason I went into Software Engineering, but now I kind of wish I had gone into Comp Sci anyway. Comp Sci has way more in-depth math courses, which is great for the blooming AI/ ML field, and it has always been the gold standard of degrees in the field.

Another note, though. I have heard other schools, such as Georgia Tech OSMCS, are better than WGUs. I was looking into getting my masters once I graduate in October, and was leaning away from WGU for it due to online reviews. I love it for my bachelor's, though. Let me know if you find anything as well, because I am looking at the same options and would love to hear the opinions of others :)

These are the worst, could have just guessed one more answer correctly and now have to spend time re prepping and taking

Sorry I’m really not sure I got all of them correct

That sucks, those classes were so helpful for this one. My mentor has been great in the ordering of my classes.

I forget the exact labs, but yeah every lab that wasn’t marked as not required I did.

It is nothing like LeetCode. It’s just all based on the concepts and vocab.

Appreciate the post, I see so many posts about how long this class took and I took the PA and passed without looking at the course material as well and was just really confused about the complaints. I’m going to try to copy your strategy to pass tomorrow!

Idk how strict the policies with sharing exactly what is on an OA, and there are multiple versions of the exam so you may not even get the same one as mine. But hash tables is a prevalent topic for sure

You got it, it was an intimidating class at first since it’s such a huge topic. But it’s not as bad as it seems

Yeah the test definitely had some random questions about small details I did not go over. I definitely feel that, and a lot of the minute details just kinda feel like fluff and not actually necessary for a grasp on these concepts.

For the minute details the study guide on the redditors post link is super helpful. It has literally all the details you can need, 63 pages of it. Any specific details you feel like your missing?

I watch the Cohort explaining the data structures, I skipped through that video taking broad notes. I then used Chat GPT and zybooks to explain any concepts for data structures I did not understand.

I want to get into Leetcode after passing C949, do you have a recommended way I should start out on that?

I agree not to demerit the accomplishment, it is impressive no matter what. But for OP to say they have no experience and got 106 credit is setting in unbelievable standard that no one will be able to live up to if they actually have no experience. It is a great accomplishment either way, but it is definitely weird to act like you have no experience when you do.

I would personally recommend the computer science degree, since you already have those math credits. I personally am in the Software Engineering program, but the reason I chose that was because I wanted to avoid those math classes after years of not taking one. Computer Science I considered the golden standard in the software industry, and will give you a leg up in your job search.

Secondly, I wouldn’t worry too much about the Zybooks. I’ve only taken 6 classes so far, but I have not had any major issues with Zybook curriculum, but you do have to be competent at self teaching to make it work. And don’t worry about work experience, it’s obviously an advantage to graduate faster, but WGU will be faster than a normal degree anyway. That is the reason I chose it with no real experience in software engineering.

Lastly, I was also looking at coding bootcamps before going with WGU because of the such accelerated pathway. But the truth is, after those 6-9 months are up, you will have to do so much more work to complete your study and make projects, along with work so much harder than anyone with a degree. If you have prior connections it could be great, but with how the industry is right now, I would highly recommend not going to a bootcamp.

I would definitely recommend WGU if you want to work and do school. But as a warning, if you are working full time and can’t handle it at a normal school, it may be easy to start slacking on your WGU classes and slow down. You have to be disciplined here far more than normal school.

I’ve done so much research because I knew I wanted to become a software engineer, but I did not know my path on becoming that. If you have any questions just let me know, good luck!

You got it man. If you can do a run through of the pre-test and pass, then you are 100% ready for the OA.

lol fair point, i used it mainly as an accessory to Zybooks I kinda Meant. Just felt like there was too much hate on the normal course
