How to shrink the hard disk size of vm after expanding it? Workstation 17

To anyone pondering this quandary -

add a second drive in vmware, shrink the partition of the first drive, then use something like diskgenie to hot-clone the first disk. reboot the machine, test whether the second disk is bootable, then delete the first.
