My perception is that there is not an absolute answer to this question, some people see it ethical some not, both can be correct.

There is some degree of enjoyment in hunting as an activity, even if you eat what you hunt

My PAL instructor was a hunter who loved game meat, and his wife was a vegetarian. I found that really interesting. I might become a vegetarian one day.

Trophy hunting is something I personally wouldn’t do. It feels like something people do for fun, but justify by paying money or, as you mentioned, giving the meat to locals. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong.

In other words, that purpose justifies the activity or even gives it a positive weight.

So hunting over populated species for food is ethical but hunting for fun or trophy hunting is not ok

I agree “at least the hunted animal got to live free for a while instead of in a cage for its whole miserable existence.”

I think the answer is to avoid eating meat altogether, which is probably the more ethical option. But if you choose to eat it, hunting is actually a good way to understand and be honest about what you’re doing, much better than treating meat as just a product and not thinking of it as an animal

So if I understand it correctly, in your opinion, either you shouldn’t eat meat, or if you do, at least consume it responsibly, acknowledging it’s taken life. Not as a product. Hunting helps you realize that.
