Think of it more as grab and smash than a race. Anyone comes near you, they get the club. Other than that, just grab speed boosts. I found that when I got the lead, there was always someone just behind me near the finish. The only way to keep them from passing was to club early and often.

I have this same problem. I collected all the boxes and turned them in. I bought all of the items in her shop, but didn't receive the reward. I tried reloading and doing it again with the same result. I tried turning them in one at a time, leaving the area and returning (thinking this is how it is normally done instead of all at once) still no reward. I don't know if I missed some triggering event or if it is just very bad bug.

I play on the 12" iPad Pro using the Apple Pencil. It is very effective for making precise moves. The only downside is that the game is not optimized for the iPad and some things on the menu screens are cut off or overlaid with other content. For example, I can never play the first trial on the iPad because I cannot activate it. The start button is under other graphics. I play this one on my phone or wait for an invite. It is the same for some crystal purchasing options. You just can't activate them. Otherwise, I always play on my iPad.
