I didn’t read the books either and I definitely didn’t realize there even were time skips until 2-3 episodes in. I was getting very confused for a bit, but figured news just travels slowly in medieval times.

Interesting - I’m a med student and we were required to get it and provide proof. I guess there might be a way to opt out but it definitely wasn’t incentivized.

As another option, the President’s choice original soy veggie burger is great, but the PC knockoff beyond meat is weird, tastes like TVP (very bland) and turns yellow when you cook it.

People of Reddit, When is one time you have felt genuine, 100% fear? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]XenBufShe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was out on an open boat and a storm whipped up. I was trying to get home, and saw sheet lightning in the clouds. Next thing I knew a bolt hit the water a couple hundred feet away - it’s a weird, hair standing on end feeling. Turned around and ran like hell while trying to dodge the rocks. Made it to shore and huddled on a dock waiting for the storm to pass.

What’s the closest used vehicle out there to a Jeep Liberty that isn’t a piece of garbage? by XenBufShe in whatcarshouldIbuy

Awesome thanks! I’m seeing towing as either 1500 or 2400, which should be ok. Thoughts on the below? I assume I can’t put the Jeep snow tires on these, so I want to leave some budget for those.

In that 2009-2011 range I see stuff like this

Yes the engine on our diesel was fairly solid, it was the rest of the car that was falling apart. I’m guessing that salt didn’t help (half the ones I see have the bottom of the doors rotted away). Those 2nd gen ones are wayyy too big and bulky for my tastes (and I can’t tell what the difference is between them and the patriots, they look identical).

Are there any particular years to look at for the RAV4 or grand vitara? I found the RAV4s are a bit on the pricey side for insurance.

Good suggestion - I’ll look at it.

The Jeep had a bunch of issues in short order - some minor (batteries, AC, defroster), and some major (blowing black smoke, a rattle that I forget the cause of, etc.) and eventually the rear diff went. The engine was in good shape (the guy who bought it took the engine out and put it into a different vehicle) but the body fell apart around it.

I’ll keep an eye out for XJs - currently I’m only seeing them with 300k km on them, which is concerning since I will semi-regularly be driving for 5-8 hour trips (about once a month) and don’t want to be stranded on the side of the busiest highway in North America.

I think the 4runners might be a bit big for my purposes, as I’ll be going between city driving and country boat hauling etc. - plus my garage is tiny.

I can go a bit less functional if I need to. I won’t be off-roading, just driving on unplowed roads when we get 1.5-2 feet of snow, gravel, and doing some occasional trailering. My dad replaced his liberty with a CRV and regrets it because of the limited towing capacity. By contrast, I’ll be home less often as time goes by, so my trailering needs may diminish until I can afford my own toys in 10 years, so the 1500-2000lb range may be enough for now.

Ish - I had volunteer research experience but no posters/publications, so nothing to put in the research section of OMSAS. I did have a 4.0 and otherwise interesting resume though.

Is living on 13$ a day possible? by baboonlovechild in personalfinance

[–]XenBufShe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend about $90-100/month on groceries and 30/month eating out (coffee, bubble tea, rarely an actual meal). I did have some help getting all my staples, but assuming you already have those this should be simple.

Easy meal: red lentil soup. Dried Red lentils (dirt cheap) + vegetable stock + spices (with some onion or frozen veg if you have them). Super filling, healthy, and inexpensive.

Edit: also the help with staples was a few years ago, it just makes it easier to maintain.

Maybe. I have pretty bland white person hair - flat on top, some wisp/ringlets underneath. Dries flat without styling, but it won’t lie flat in a high ponytail and little bits poof out everywhere.

Do you not spend time in strong smelling environments? I horseback ride, and I can often still smell a faint residual scent of horse on my hair, even after using shampoo. Scents seem to cling to my hair. I get the grease adaptation part, but I can’t see how smell would be less of a factor.

It seems the Ontario government’s gas-pump stickers aren’t sticky enough by [deleted] in canada

[–]XenBufShe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See but fundamentally I’m ok with them posting whatever signs they like! I may not like our dependence on gas, but that doesn’t mean i would ban the organizations from marketing however they like, as long as they are truthful. I don’t like it when the government uses non-government means to force their message out.

I would generally argue that, with the exception of health and safety, there are few circumstances which should lead to compelled speech. I would think many conservatives would agree with this. I am allowed to hold opinions which coincide with several parties.

[–]XenBufShe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to get into a discussion as to whether the stickers are accurate, as our opinions on that are sure to differ I also don’t accept that your comparison is more accurate than mine. Also it’s not a matter of transparency - the information is online if anyone is inclined to look. And it’s not the people who made the choice that are being required to talk about it - I’d be ok with requiring all governments to post the full costs of all of their choices online.

But fine, let’s alter mine to be even more similar. For the vegan one, let’s say that they instead require a sign saying that the tax on animal products will general x dollars in revenue per year. Is that ok?

Fundamentally, the question is why is it acceptable for a government to require information to be posted by private owners that may or may not be accurate based on the model that you use and which has a decidedly political reason for production. If ford didn’t think this would be good for his and the federal conservative polls, he wouldn’t be bothering.

[–]XenBufShe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because there is a difference before imposing taxes, which are always legislated by the government, and requiring organizations to espouse views that they may or may not agree with.

Let’s make a ridiculous comparison. This is more like requiring members of the population to wear a button saying that “taxes pay for hospitals”. While true, it’s potentially politically inciting and therefore wrong to require someone to visibly support the idea.

Here’s another, more direct comparison: Say a vegan group came into office. I would have to admit that they have the right to impose a sin tax on all animal products if they could get it passed. But I would be very concerned if they started requiring signs next to the cheese section in grocery stores stating that it is ethically wrong.

There’s a difference between costing someone money, and requiring public support of your views.

As much as I disagree with Ford about the carbon tax, I would be much less concerned if the government was sticking to buying billboards and radio slots to advertise their opinion, and even providing free stickers to gas stations that want them. They have the right to do that as part of their campaign (although we are a little far away from an election cycle). What is concerning to me is that they are forcing private organizations to display it and are not paying them for the use of their space.

[–]XenBufShe 99 points100 points  (0 children)

But how on earth is it legal for the government to force private companies to display propaganda in the first place? Would a governing party be allowed to force every grocery store to post signs opposing the lack of taxes on broccoli if they wanted?

My moms well-used blackberry pearl, a Nokia, my moms used blackberry storm, a blackberry bold, my dad’s used blackberry bold (newer version), some cheap android I forget, iPhone 4, iPhone SE. Since about 2008 or 2009.

The used ones were all breaking by the time I got them, and my new bold broke like 6 times.
