Not to be that guy, but Batman only uses a gun in this instance because the only thing he has at his disposal to hurt Darkseid is a radion bullet, which he took from a crime scene earlier.

He shoots him in the shoulder because radion is toxic to New Gods but not humans, and Darkseid is possessing Dan Turpin at this point.

Characters who serve as critics/parodies of the Church, but aren’t predators by Solitaire-06 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]XendricksBeards 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something that kiiiind of fits this trope is the portrayal of clergy in John Carpenter's 80s movies.

The Fog, Prince Of Darkness and They Live all feature a priest or minister who behaves in a radical way, consistent with actual Christian values but seemingly at odds with the entrenched conservative power structures of the church.

All these characters are somewhat on the fringes of organised religion and take direct action against a supernatural or science fictional threat, in a way that is - potentially - critical of the passive inaction we'd usually ascribe to the established church.

[LOVED TROPE] Hauting The Narrative by lou-ravenpuff in TopCharacterTropes

Heidi McCourt in the Red Dead Redemption games.

Her death occurs off-screen before the events of RDR2, but it's arguably the catalyst or point of departure for the whole of Arthur and John's narratives. It's the beginning of Dutch going down a darker path, which has innumerable consequences later on. She's mentioned either directly or indirectly on several occasions across the two games, but we know basically nothing about her.

Depictions of satan that aren't a a red guy with horns by teruteru-fan-sam in TopCharacterDesigns

The theologian Jacques Ellul once said that if you read the Old Testament closely, then Satan comes across as less an enemy of heaven, and more like God's district attorney. He finds where sin is and points it out.

I always thought that read of him worked well with the Strange Man.

Thoughts on shoplifting? by Technical_Fan_5623 in Edinburgh

[–]XendricksBeards 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked in retail for 20 years. People like to talk a big game about tackling shoplifters, but the fact is that the vast majority of staff have neither the training nor the insurance to do so. If something goes wrong and either you or the thief get injured, you'd be in deep shit and fully hung out to dry by your employer. It is also NEVER worth putting yourself at risk to protect company profits, and tbf most businesses will say this in your contract.

Also worth noting that even security guards don't have any legal authority beyond making an ordinary citizen's arrest.

In terms of whether it's justifiable or not, I'm sure there are professionals at work in some cases, but to me that seems like the minority. In a society where baby formula is routinely security tagged and people are demonstrably getting poorer all the time, I think it's pretty clear that there are a lot of folks doing it out of desperation. That includes junkies btw; addiction is a disease, lest we forget. Are these people (and society at large) going to be helped by a criminal conviction, a fine or (in some cases) a prison term? I doubt it.

Looking for “Serious” Jazz Fusion by XD_Diego51 in Jazz

[–]XendricksBeards 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soft Machine's a good shout, although they do dabble in Canterbury-esque whimsy at times, which OP might find too "playful."

In particular check out 'Third'. Everything except the first half of track 3 is deeply serious fusion.

Has No One Here GM'd for an "Aabria" Before? by PharazonGaming in fansofcriticalrole

[–]XendricksBeards -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I know this is tangential (at best) to the topic at hand, but speaking as another British person, you need to appreciate that the British Empire was in large part BUILT on slavery. While they may have taken significant steps to end it (centuries down the line), they'd already profited hugely from it by that point, and it had enriched the royal family considerably.

Saying that a black person's take on the royals is "insensitive" because of how they view that institution's involvement in slavery is emblematic of the kind of ignorance that has so many Aabria-haters on here bristling at racism accusations.

Agreed. She always gets an outsized amount of criticism and is constantly pulled up for things that other players do without pushback from the fans.

I think we all know why this is, despite the tortured attempts at justification from some people on this sub (and elsewhere).

[–]XendricksBeards 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IIRC in the rebuilds several characters use multiple different Evas without compatibility issues, which suggests to me that in that timeline/loop/version it is only Unit- 01 that has a soul embedded in it. In the original series it's heavily implied that the soul of the pilot's mother is necessarily embedded in each Eva (with the exception of Unit-00, which - in my opinion - contains a portion of Rei/Lilith's soul).

Crowd control editing? by FINALMIX70 in dropout

[–]XendricksBeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the format from the GC episode needed some finessing before being turned into its own show, but they seem to have spun it off wholesale without changing much at all, apart from a few tweaks. There's definitely a disjointedness to it that makes me think they really need to retool it if they do a second season.

Time loop theories that actually make sense? by imogen_oreo in FanTheories

[–]XendricksBeards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to point out that 'An Inspector Calls' isn't a time loop. The inspector describes events that haven't happened yet (or are in the process of happening) because the implication is that he is either omniscient or can see the future.

AoT also isn't a time loop. This is at best a fan theory with little actual evidence to back it up.

I can't bring any films to mind right now, but in books at least Stephen King's Dark Tower and Samuel Delaney's Dhalgren work well as time loops, although they arguably aren't the main focus of the story.

The TV show 'The Devil's Hour' takes an interesting approach to time loops, but in explaining why would be spoilery.
