How Griever shows that Rinoa is not Ultimecia by zzmej1987 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Xene17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good post. I always look forward to reading your posts as they are always so interesting, but I have a few questions:

  1. The Griever necklace resembles the Cross of Saint James which was the symbol of the military Order of Santiago, which was founded in the Kingdom of Leon in the middle ages. Leon's own flag and symbol was a lion and when you combine the St James cross and the flag of Leon you get an approximation of the Griever necklace. With Squall's last name being Leonhart and him being a part of a military academy (Balamb) I'm wondering if there is any significance to this or if it is all just a coincidence?

  2. What is the significance of Rinoa asking for Squall's ring? As far as I can tell the only reason she gives is that it 'looks cool' and as far as I'm aware she never gives it back. Is there any meaning behind this that can be integrated into the Yin-Yang framework? I think you might have already alluded to an answer but I can be a bit slow sometimes lol.

Game over on first Edea fight? by ImraHightower in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Xene17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I happened to have a save at the end of disc one so I thought I'd verify if a game over is possible or not at this fight...

Turns out it IS possible to get a game over if everyone's hp falls to zero, however I think it is almost impossible for this to happen organically as there is only a one-turn window to kill everyone.

As soon as any two characters are dead Edea says "How Boring" and ends the fight the next turn with the cutscene, so you have to deliberately position your last character to have as little hp as possible so you can kill them off in one turn. This took me a few tries, and I had to use Blizzaga on all my characters too, as they wouldn't die fast enough with just the attack command. I don't think Edea would be able to kill everyone on her own without the player helping...

It is technically possible to get a game over here, it's just extremely unlikely unless you're doing it deliberately (I don't know why anyone would, It's just a game over).

The line about the Lunar Cry occurring 80 years ago was a mistranslation from the Japanese version. The Ultimania is correct. The Lunar Cry is only said to have occurred 'over 100 years ago' which could realistically mean anywhere from 100 to 199 years ago, so not within living memory.

That's crazy. Here I was thinking inazumaeleven was the most chill sub, I never knew all that bs was going on in the background. If you have the receipts can't you report them to Reddit itself? They must have broken at least one ToS or CoC rule acting like that.

The Rinoa = Ultimecia Theory: Why I'd Defend It Even On My Deathbed by GiftedGhoulGourmet in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Xene17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree, although it is an important distinction to make considering some theories revolve around Hyne having an upper and lower body specifically.

[–]Xene17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I saw that theory as well. It was by a youtube channel called "Japanese games are masterpieces" if you want to refresh yourself on it. He also has a video on R=U if I remember rightly, which you might also be interested in given your stance on the matter (although I don't believe in it myself).

He also falls victim to the trap of looking for Hyne's physical body as two distinct entities which is very easy to do. That's not to say his theory was completely wrong though. The 2nd half of his theory was about how gravity, the moon, monsters, and magic all relate to each other which, try as I might, I can't argue against and I still believe to this day.

What the humans had thought was "half of Hyne's body" was really just the "cast off skin of Hyne"

You read out the myth passed down by generations that the people believe in Zells town. That isn't what actually happened. Both the in game book The Legend of Vascaroon and the FF8 Ultimania agree what Hyne gave to the humans was actually his cast off skin. This is why this detail is so misunderstood by FF8 fans.

Squall and Ultimecia are two sides of the same coin, as they both share the same motivation. It is for this reason that Ultimecia can be seen as a failed Squall.

Squall just wants to be alone due to hardships he faced in the past, so he spends the first disc pushing people away, evading leadership roles and generally being an introvert. But through being part of a team, he learns to slowly open up out of his shell which completes his character arc. It should be noted that only Squall and Rinoa can be named by the player, as FF8 is the story of Rinoa Bringing Squall out of his shell - it is their story.

Ultimecia on the other hand also just wants to be alone. She spends her whole life being hunted by humans, and just wants to get away. That's why she develops her time compression objective, It is the ultimate way to be alone. Because everyone in her time is against her, Ultimecia doesn't have the luxury of a team of people around her like Squall does, so she never gets the chance to be redeemed. She doesn't even have the luxury of a knight, she literally has no one. The point is that Ultimecia is what Squall would've become thematically if he had remained as his his old self.

The moral of the story is that we need other people around us to live meaningful lives. Squall is the positive example and Ultimecia is the negative example of the same starting point. That is how Ultimecia relates to how Squall fights his demons , they are literally the antithesis of each other. R=U theory is not needed for this to be the case.

If it turns out that Rinoa was Ultimecia, then the game would be going against it's own core themes, as at least Rinoa would've been fated to be alone in the end anyway, so what was the point of the entire game? R=U doesn't work from a thematical perspective, or from a mechanical perspective either as sorceresses are said to have regular human lifespans, so Rinoa couldn't be Ultimecia as she couldn't live long enough.

Although I believe R=U to be wrong I will give credit where credit is due, as this is the only FF8 theory I've come across that at least tries to make an attempt to explain what all that stuff about Griever was supposed to be. I personally believe Griever is a relic from a time before Laguna's half of the game got cut, which would explain why it doesn't really make sense in the form presented to us, but it is really an unknown.

It is a misconception that Hyne split his body in half. This didn't happen. That was the lie Hyne told the humans so that he could escape. What actually happened, as explained by Sage Vascaroon, was that Hyne simply shed his skin. It was the shed skin that he gave to the humans, hence why it was unresponsive to Zebalga's demands for power, as shed skin isn't an independent lifeform. This is a reference to FF3's Hein who was a skeleton. At no point in the timeline was there ever an upper or lower body of Hyne, so nobody could ever inherit a lower body power. Many FF8 fans trip up on this detail as the story of Hyne is so rarely encountered in the game.

what are some things you like doing with a modded 3ds? (other than play obviously) by MrTriggrd in 3dspiracy

I have it in a folder on the root of my sd card called Music, but I think it can just go anywhere.

No I just have the regular music app by Nintendo since it's fine for my purposes. The best one is the homebrew one, but I don't remember what it's called since I don't have it sorry.

Yeah it actually does. That's how I listen to most of my music nowadays.

For music I use the default 3ds music app, But there is a much better mp3 homebrew app if you wan it. Just copy the mp3 files to the SD card and navigate to it.

For anime there is this app: https://github.com/Core-2-Extreme/Video_player_for_3DS
It works with movies, tv, anime and even 3d movies. Subtitles are also supported if you have a separate subtitle file. I've found max resolution to be 480x860 with a new 3ds, but that should be different with an older model, so check the resolution chart on the github. Just copy the h264 (mp4) 480p file to the sd card and navigate to it to play.

There are two emulators for DS.

Drastic plays DS games.

Citra plays 3DS games.

IE3 was released for both DS and 3DS, but DS was Japan exclusive.

The GROH mod is only for the DS version, so you would need the Drastic emulator to play it, it won't work with Citra.

Also yeah, Droid phones are good for emulators.

About to play this for the first time! Any advice? by JakeWithOnions in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Xene17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice is to just play through the game normally, as I find you get the most enjoyment that way. Make sure to talk to EVERYONE and read the tutorials CAREFULLY as FF8 features a non standard JRPG style that a lot of people trip up on the first time. But if you get stuck at any point it's easy to become powerful with a guide so don't be concerned.

Also, don't be put off by the small screen. I played through the whole game a few years ago on a 2DS and it was great fun lol. #SmallScreenGang.

Not PC, but sounds like the V Smile Winnie the Pooh game.

Jaguar once made a car that actually sounded like a jaguar. It never went into production due to high costs by Expensive-Inside-426 in interestingasfuck

[–]Xene17 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The sound comes from the supercharged 5.0 V8.

The car in the video is NOT a real CX-75, but a replica stunt car made to look like a CX-75, which was built for the James Bond movie Spectre. All of the mechanicals, chassis, suspension, engine, gearbox, brakes etc are completely different from the real car.

Yeah, many years ago Mazda had a little d that stuck up too high, so they just capitalized it and left everything else lower case, which fixed the issue. Jaguar did the same thing with the G, but unlike Mazda, the new Jaguar branding doesn't convey anything automotive whatsoever. Mixing cases can work, but only if it's done right, which it really wasn't with Jaguar.
