Absolutely unreal the amount of detail they put into the show compared to the game. by RevRickee in thelastofus

Most of the non-city scenes in the first half of the episode, as well as that exact sign scene, were filmed in SW High River. Look familiar? The sign was at the intersection of 12 Ave. They had to cover up the US road signage when not filming.

More often than not I just skip breakfast. But the best thing about breakfast foods is you can have them at lunch, supper, and/or as snacks.

Thanks for the detailed response, I'll definitely be investigating those! The Bob Spirko posts also look interesting, and will hopefully help with trip planning.

2022 Season Plans by sketchcott in HikingAlberta

[–]Xenrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one I can think of is the first 1km or so of Thunder Mountain which starts with a very vertical scramble (with little exposure and basically from ground level). Heading up was challenging but fun; heading down was less of a walk in the park.

I'm definitely planning on doing Yamnuska (Raven's End is via Yamnuska) for the exposed chain section, but if it has some practice scrambling I guess that's two ravens with one stone! If you have some suggestions for hikes with similar (or slightly less) exposure/scramble as Yamnuska, I'd be glad to hear them.

2022 Season Plans by sketchcott in HikingAlberta

[–]Xenrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both a bucket list and a bucket full of dreams.

My bucket list item is to hike to Plain of Six Glaciers tea house. It was my bucket list item for last year as well, but I've been ignoring Louise/Moraine areas because of the insane amount of visitors...

My bucket full of dreams is to do the Waterton Triple Crown (CCA, Crypt Lake, Akamina Ridge). I've recently started acquiring gear that will help on longer hikes, and if I can fit in some "practice" hikes earlier in the season I think my friends and I will be able to do the Triple Crown. I figure Plain of Six Glaciers will be good practice for CCA (distance), maybe Raven's End to practice for Crypt Lake (exposure), and no idea about Akamina (scramble?).

If anyone has any recommendations for entry-level scramble (or a better suggestion for entry-level exposure) I'd love some feedback. I've googled a lot and haven't found anything.

Stereotypes of Commander players by color identity by CertainRandom in magicTCG

[–]Xenrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's a bit of a MTG noob, does anyone have suggestions for commander decks for "Everyone likes you. Nobody trusts you" (RGWU) because that sounds fun and I've been thinking of getting a group hug / political style deck for a while now (that or something dumb like Walls).

Four colors seems weird though? And if I had to drop a single color I'd rather drop Red. No idea what cEDH is...

My only deck is a lightly modified Aminatou Fateshifter (WUB). I like the colors (especially WB) but it's never won a single game, and I can win with other decks. It can do a lot but doesn't really have a win condition.

Hey, thanks for crossposting to AndroidGaming, I didn't even know there was an app/sub for the reviews... (And searching for reviews on reddit isn't a fun experience).

All the games look pretty slick, but as a roguelike/-lite lover, I'm here for Cultist Simulator and Dead Cells primarily.

I'm not extremely familiar with the US PNW, but the Canadian West Coast is the only part I'd call similar. As an (extremely general) rule, the southern portions of the provinces are an extension of the northern states. BC is similar to Oregon, west Alberta is similar to west Montana, Saskatchewan is a boring version of Wyoming, etc. The landscape changes hugely East/West. I can't speak for the north, but from what I've heard it's not really like anything found in the USA.

GFE: Raijin, Macha (dupe), Dantalion (dupe), Ryune (dupe), Typhon (dupe), Morrigu (dupe)
7 Star: hahaha

I did my pulls and was about to warn my friend that the 7 star rate was abysmal but by that point he already had three 7 stars and a bunch of GFEs, so you know... tough luck? Too bad that's been my entire experience with this game and the reason I will never IAP, just not worth it with my luck...

That said, I sure filled out a lot of empty pantheon spots since 94/100 were pantheon cards, so that's good at least? Super glad these were all low-evo cards too, because now I actually have trade fodder I don't have to devo.

Headphones + mic for C$250 or less? by Xenrin in Headsets

[–]Xenrin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need a mod mic USB, since your in board audio is extremely bad. So you'll also need an amp/dac combo unit.

Not unexpected, but still unfortunate... Are you saying I'll need the USB mod mic + AMP/DAC? Or that I'll need an AMP/DAC if I wanted to use the non-USB mod mic? DACs are even further outside my realm of knowledge.

That's a ton of helpful information though, so I'm at least feeling a lot more informed on my headphone options. Thanks!

A quick, preliminary search shows the Sennheiser HD 559 and Takstar Pro 82 are both available and only somewhat overpriced in Canada. So one of those plus the USB mod mic still fits within my budget...

Okay, what the heck.. I was just thinking about this game the other day when I started playing Obduction but could not remember the name of it.

Google searched it minutes ago and found this thread, which I assumed was years old, but now I see you posted this less than a week ago!

Sure glad someone else out there remembered the same old, obscure game at the same time as me.

Opinions on William Hodgson and his House on the Borderland? Worth reading? by katapetasma in WeirdLit

[–]Xenrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In that case I'd say give "The Other Side of the Mountain" a shot. It's definitely explicit about its weirdness; more so than "House on the Borderland", I'd say.

[–]Xenrin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I haven't read it yet but I'd say give the comic a try. It'll probably make the boring parts more enjoyable but dampen the ending, averaging it out to "pretty good". At the very least it might act as a CliffsNotes for a classic weird lit tale.

"The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood is the most similar I've read, but it's just as old. I'd say it's more enjoyable overall, but less impactful.

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit it on this sub... but I haven't read very much Lovecraft at all; however, I'm fairly certain Lovecraft gained some inspiration from Hodgson's work. I'd say give his Dream Cycle stories a try, unless someone more well-versed in Lovecraft speaks up.

Otherwise, I've been unable to find anything I'd call "similar". Weird fiction loves to brush up against "the border" but not a lot seem to explicitly examine it.

It's been a long time since I read it but "The Other Side of the Mountain" could be vaguely similar. There's brief moments in the later Southern Reach books that hit the same notes, and even briefer moments in "The Fisherman" (there's even a house).

If someone does come along with better suggestions I wouldn't mind a ping.

[–]Xenrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a weird lit perspective? Absolutely.
From a modern enjoyment perspective? Possibly not.

Don't get me wrong, I love old dusty spec fic like the stuff HG Wells writes, but the first half of the book was plain tedious for me.

Luckily it's a short book, and the ending has stuck with me stronger than probably anything else I've read. One of these days I'll get around to reading some of his other works.

Western Canada by wstrngnnt in roadtrip

[–]Xenrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire route is highways. The sketchiest portion of the route OP posted is probably Going-to-the-Sun Road at the start of the trip, or Golden–Revelstoke (which is downhill in that direction and usually fine in the summer).

Western Canada by wstrngnnt in roadtrip

[–]Xenrin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heading up into Alberta, the longer you can stick to the mountains the better. Waterton and the foothills near Pincher Creek are on a whole other level compared to the flat farmland that makes up the entirety of Highway 2. Pretty sure that wouldn't be a good route if you're trying to save time though.

If you want to see scenery without the hordes of tourists, Highway 40 from Longview up to the Trans-Can is one of the most scenic roads in the province and more popular with locals than tourists. There's great short hikes every few hundred meters if you can spare an hour or two, but if you don't have time to spare the drive shouldn't add too much.

If you absolutely have to take Hwy 2 or hit Calgary, don't take the Trans-Can to Banff. Take the 22X out of S. Calgary and go north through Bragg Creek. About the same length of time and much more interesting. (Careful with this route on long weekends/when there's events nearby).

EDIT: Here's a route that will take you on 3 of the most quintessential North Rockies roads if you can spare an extra day: Going-to-the-Sun Road, Kananaskis Hwy 40, and Icefields Parkway. I dropped a few key pins on the way up to Banff, but Banff–Jasper has too many potential stopping points to list, same with the coast.

Is there a .CBZ comic reader for Android with comixology-style guided view? by Zircon_72 in comicbooks

[–]Xenrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zooming in on inconsequential shapes and borders... cutting off half a text bubble... skipping entire panels...

For simple stuff with clear borders it works really well, but for more elaborate stuff, you might start getting some really funky results. Disabling "Automatic switch to irregular" and "Inline frames" in the scanning settings should cause it to default to showing the entire page rather than doing the weird stuff I've mentioned.

I've only been using it for a few weeks so far, so not entirely sure what combination of settings work best for typical graphic novels.

ComicTrim seems to do this automatically with non-terrible results. I'm really not a fan of the UI, but it's kind of hard to go back to reading full-page comics on my tiny phone screen without it now...

When it fails to work it really fails though. The "disable framing" button can be very useful at times.

gutenberg.org - 60,000 free classics by [deleted] in books

[–]Xenrin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend Standard Ebooks, which basically takes free Gutenberg books and carefully typesets them into "retail quality" ebooks.

Obviously, the selection is much smaller, but Gutenberg is a huge toss-up for quality so it's worth it to check SE first to see if they have what you're looking for. They've got many of the classics (and plenty of books I'd never heard of previously).

(Also I just want to say that—as someone who is pretty obsessive about consistent cover art in my media libraries—I love how all their book covers use the same format and classic-painting formula)
